Safeguarding a Future for Africa's Elephants
The S.A.F.E. campaign is dedicated to galvanizing and uniting the tourism industry to help end the dramatic rise in poaching of Africa's elephants. S.A.F.E. is a travel industry initiative from The Bodhi Tree Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to mobilize travelers and travel organizations to aid travel sustainability causes around the world.

Visit to Azura's Rainbow Fund

Empowers Africa Trustees and Advisory Committee Members had the pleasure of visiting a primary school on Benguerra Island that was built by Azura's Rainbow Fund. Azura's Rainbow Fund is Mozambique's first officially registered charity organization that is directly affiliated with a tourism property. Recently, members of both our Board of Trustees and Advisory Committee visited the Lalela Project on a trip to the Western Cape, South Africa. The Lalela Project provides education through the arts to children grades 1-12 in a safe space during the vulnerable after-school hours and holiday periods. The Lalela Project uses the power of the arts to help students navigate a clear path that is often cluttered with the hazards of extreme poverty, including gang violence, HIV/AIDS, and physical and substance abuse. Visit to the Niassa National Reserve and WCS

Some members of the Board of Trustees and the Advisory Committee traveled to the Niassa National Reserve in Mozambique. Niassa is Mozambique's most important protected area, harboring the country's largest population of wildlife, including 70 percent of Mozambique's elephants (13,000). The vast Niassa-Selous transboundary woodland of Mozambique and Tanzania once was home to over 70,000 elephants -- the largest population in East Africa and second-largest in all of Africa. However, many believe that more elephants have been killed in this area than any other place in the world. [READ MORE]
