Empowers Africa hosted a special screening of National Geographic's "Battle for the Elephants" at Guild Hall in East Hampton, New York, on August 10, 2013, along with fashion designer Donna Karan, artist Davina Dobie, and filmmaker and writer John Heminway. Guests included David Koch; Nina Griscom; Stewart Paperin, president of the Soros Economic Development Fund; Lynn Sherr, correspondent for ABC news magazine "20/20"; and Bryan Christy, award-winning author and journalist. The film was primarily funded by David H. Koch. We want to thank everyone who attended this successful event!

Dr. Pete Morkel and trackers fit a black rhino in Liwonde National Park in Malawi with a new satellite device designed for observation and protection.

Thanks to a donation from Empowers Africa to the Wilderness Wildlife Trust, 10-year-old Namagogodo, a black rhino from the Liwonde National Park in Malawi, was darted last month and fitted with a new satellite device and VHF transponder. This will ensure that the park's rhino monitors are equipped to observe the rhino and ensure his safety. This was especially important since Namagogodo had moved out of the sanctuary and was fairly far south in the park, making him vulnerable to potential poachers.

Like many others in Africa, the small population of black rhinos in Liwonde is severely threatened by poachers. This, coupled with the limited resources of Malawi's Department of National Parks and Wildlife in continuing its protection, necessitated the launch of the trust's Liwonde Rhino Protection Project in 2012.

Empowers Africa is proud to support the antipoaching efforts of the Wilderness Wildlife Trust.

Empowers Africa made a grant to purchase and install gutters and rainwater tanks at the Utah Community Garden Project in the Sabi Sands area in South Africa. This will enable the garden to capture and store water for irrigation. The guttering and tanks were installed on the adjacent local school (Manyeleti School)  and will also provide much-needed water for the children. The Utah Community Garden Project is run by a group of volunteer mothers who sell the produce to the neighboring eco-tourism lodges. The garden also supplies the Manyeleti School with a weekly parcel of produce for its feeding scheme, and each volunteer mother is entitled to a package of produce for her home. This project is also championed by the Thornybush Collection, Nedbank and the Buffelshoek Trust.

Eddie Bauer's Fall Outfitter Book to Support Empowers Africa
This year Eddie Bauer gave Richard Wiese, as one of its sponsored guides and athletes, the opportunity to feature the charity of his choice in its Fall Outfitter Book. He chose Empowers Africa, and 2% of the sales proceeds from this catalog will be donated to our organization. This money will be used to support Africa Foundation's business linkage program -- a community garden similar to the one featured in the "Born to Explore" Zulu Community Garden (see videos below).

Only sales of items that have specific catalog item codes will be designated as an Empowers Africa donation. The item codes are only available from the catalog, not from the website, though orders can be processed on the website with the catalog code "catalog quick order". We encourage you to order a catalog (click here) and place orders before the end of October to support this generous initiative. The clothes and accessories are perfect for a safari and other outdoor activities.

We want to thank Eddie Bauer and Richard Wiese for their support!

"Born to Explore" TV Show Features Empowers Africa Projects
Richard Wiese, host and producer of "Born to Explore" (ABC Saturday mornings), traveled to South Africa to meet some of the champions of our projects.

In Cape Town he was hosted by Imibala and had the opportunity to attend and film its annual talent show. See below for an interview with the winner, 13-year-old opera singer Asemahle Sentiwe from the township of Nonzamo. The episode that featured this project and other stories around Cape Town was viewed by 1.5 million people. "I am always so profoundly moved by people who are able to succeed despite very challenging conditions, and how such a small "hand up" can make such a difference for the rest of their lives," says Richard Wiese.  To find out more about each of these videos, click here.
