Greetings!

We're breaking boundaries in Precinct 4! Now that we've reached mid-summer, I want to remind you how easy it is to canoe, kayak, and experience your Precinct 4 parks. Families, groups, and individuals can now reserve guided activities and equipment online nearly every day of the week through our Trails As Parks division at no cost. Never again allow a lack of equipment or experience to hold you back.

Our barrier-free parks also give children of all abilities the chance to interact and play together in a safe environment. These playgrounds are something every parent can feel good about while they're truly a blessing for the children who need them most.

Precinct 4 also has one of the most active Senior Adult Programs around. Anyone 50 years of age and better can sign up for complimentary and low-cost bus trips across southeast Texas. That's something to get excited about! Read about all these amenities and more in this edition of E-Corner

Don't forget to access past issues of Commissioner's E-Corner on the Precinct 4 website. When you visit Precinct 4 online, you can also learn more about the road projects taking place, as well as the upcoming events at Precinct 4's community centers and parks, and Senior Adult Program activities through Fun4Seniors.

Sincerely,

Commissioner R. Jack Cagle

Harris County Precinct 4
New Activities Coming to a Park Near You

Precinct 4 expands recreational activities for all ages.
Precinct 4's mobile recreational unit is bringing archery, canoeing, geocaching, and more to a park near you. View upcoming events and register for Precinct 4's Trails As Parks program at www.hcp4.net/TAP.

"We have activities geared to families, school children, and working adults scheduled at convenient times throughout the week and weekend," said Monte Parks, TAP educational programmer. "No matter your age or schedule, there's an event for you."

Events change throughout the year and may include stargazing, camping, birding, junior canoe training, bike riding, and more. Visitors may also search for upcoming events by category, location, activity, or date by visiting Precinct 4's Trails As Parks page online.

Precinct 4 Commissioner R. Jack Cagle wanted to expand already popular Precinct 4 programming and create new activities, such as archery lessons, using existing amenities.

"We provide everything you need. You can't find a program like this anywhere else in the county," said Commissioner Cagle. "We're offering individuals the chance to use Precinct 4 equipment and learn new skills at nearby parks at no cost."

No specialized equipment or fees are required to participate. Each event is held at a different Precinct 4 park under the guidance of science experts, naturalists, anglers, and archery instructors.

Covering more than 3,800 acres of greenspace, Precinct 4 spans two greenways along Spring and Cypress creeks. As Precinct 4 works to connect more parks across the precinct, recreational opportunities will continue to grow. Find more Precinct 4 recreational activities online at www.hcp4.net/TAP or visit the parks page at www.hcp4.net/Community/Parks.

Inclusive Playgrounds Serve Children of All Abilities
Precinct 4 features barrier-free playgrounds

at Lindsay/Lyons and Matzke parks.

Get out and explore more of Precinct 4 this summer! With two barrier-free playgrounds, Precinct 4 makes it easy for children to enjoy quality recreation no matter their needs.

The playgrounds, located at Lindsay/Lyons Park in Humble and Matzke Park in Cy-Fair, both include sensory gardens for sight impaired children, wheelchair-accessible ramps, shade toppers, space nets, Sway Fun gliders, and inclusive swing sets.

At 10,425 square feet, the playground at Lindsay/Lyons Park in Humble is the largest in Harris County Precinct 4, featuring restrooms for children of all abilities, rubber surfacing, eight ground-level areas and 45 elevated play areas, most of which are accessible by ramp. Other attractions include a rock tunnel and ridge climber, roller slide, and shade toppers across approximately 80 percent of the play structures, making playtime more comfortable for all.

Matzke Park in Cy-fair includes a gazebo, benches throughout the garden, a play booster, picnic areas, and asphalt-paved walking trails with drinking fountains. Four soccer fields and a cricket field also make this a popular spot for sports teams.

In addition to providing a safe space, barrier-free playgrounds offer children of all abilities the chance to interact, leading to a greater understanding and appreciation of each other. Families of children with disabilities often use these locations for birthday parties, while local school districts use them as a field trip destinations for special needs children.

Lindsay/Lyons Park is located at 2310 Atascocita Road at Ygnacio while Matzke Park is located at 13110 Jones Road.
Both playgrounds were built in partnership with Be An Angel, which helps provide barrier free playgrounds across Texas.

Road & Bridge Update
Road & Bridge crews mow along county right-of-ways.
It's the season for outdoor fun. But for Precinct 4's Road & Bridge Department, it's also one of the busiest times of year for road maintenance.

From March through December, Precinct 4's Road & Bridge Department works almost every day to mow along county roads to control weeds, not only for aesthetic purposes, but to enhance visibility and improve drainage.

The combination of heavy rain and heat make roadway maintenance even more important as grass and weeds can quickly become unmanageable.

Summer storms can also be brutal on roadways, leading to sinkholes and cracks as heavy rain erodes the soil underneath. Crews work daily to patch potholes, depressions, and cracks before they grow into bigger problems. With regular maintenance, crews can extend the life of roadways before more expensive repairs are needed.

Other problems can occur from lack of rain as the weather heats up and saps moisture from the ground, leading to dust build-up and loose gravel along roadways. Crews regularly sweep busy roadways to help protect cars from dirt and debris that can ruin paint and slow the flow of traffic.

Precinct 4's regular maintenance projects don't slow down either. Road & Bridge crews still perform concrete and culvert repairs, resurfacing and repaving projects, sign repair or replacement, and trash pick-up as needed. So next time you see one of our guys out working in the heat, give him a wave and let him know he's appreciated.

To request a repair, contact the Community Assistance Department at 281-353-8424 or visit www.hcp4.net/Community/RoadsBridges.

Have a taste for culture? Call Precinct 4's Senior Adult Program to receive free tickets and transportation to one of the exciting array of performances presented by the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, or the Houston Grand Opera at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

These are just a few of the many trips you can sign up for each month. Most trips are either free or require a small fee to cover the ticket cost.

Each year, Harris County Precinct 4's Senior Adult Program provides day trip transportation to more than 30,000 adults ages 50 and over who participate in organized senior adult groups within Precinct 4, as well as regularly planned recreational day trips open to individuals. To browse available trips, visit www.hcp4.net/community/SAP/events.

Any senior adult groups with ten or more members are encouraged to sign up for transportation to destinations of their choice. Start planning your group's trip by attending Precinct 4's next trip coordinator training meeting Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Mangum-Howell Center in Doss Park, 2500 Frick Road, Houston. Training is required for new trip coordinators or coordinators who haven't attended a training session in the last three years.

Participating organizations such as church groups, civic organizations, and gardening clubs are guaranteed the use of at least four buses per year. To view the remaining trip coordinator training dates for 2016, visit www.hcp4.net/community/SAP/daytrips/coordinatormeetings
