I marvel at the people and places that make me proud to be a Precinct 4 resident! Read an update on heroic Houston Firefighter and Precinct 4 resident Captain Bill Dowling and his family, and I know you'll join me in being honored and moved to have their family as neighbors.

National Trails Day is the first weekend in June, which is just around the corner. Please join our parks staff in celebrating and enjoying any of our numerous trails in Precinct 4, including the Spring Creek and Cypress Creek Greenways.

As we see the close of another school year and the beginning of another summer, please stay safe and instill in those close to you a sense of Precinct 4 pride. The Harris County Precinct 4 staff continues to do so every day in delivering services to you and maintaining our parks and roads.

Don't forget that you can access past issues of Commissioner's E-Corner on the Precinct 4 website. When you visit Precinct 4 online, you can also learn more about the road projects taking place, as well as the upcoming events at Precinct 4's community centers and parks, and Senior Adult Program activities through Fun4Seniors.

Sincerely,

Commissioner R. Jack Cagle

West Greens Road Expansion Complete

The business corridor near SH 249 (Tomball Tollway) and Beltway 8 got a major boost recently as Commissioner Cagle joined representatives of TxDOT and the City of Houston to open West Greens Road between SH 249 and Cutten Road.

This four-lane boulevard eliminated a grade crossing with a new bridge over the railroad tracks running parallel to the highway. The project, which includes new traffic signals at the intersection of Cutten Road and West Greens, was completed three months ahead of schedule.

Tomball Welcomes New Tech Center

One of Precinct 4's Capital Improvement projects, at the intersection of Holderreith and Hufsmith-Kohrville roads, will benefit residents and new business in the Tomball area. Tomball Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) recently broke ground on the Tomball Business and Technology Park, a 120-acre property located on the northwest corner of the intersection.

The site is a master-planned business park with variable lot sizes available that can accommodate different uses. Precinct 4 is in the process of designing and installing traffic signals at the intersection as Tomball continues to grow. Work should begin on the signals in late summer. For more information on TEDC, visit www.tomballtxedc.org.

Proud Neighbors

Precinct 4 is proud to call Houston Fire Department Captain Bill Dowling and his family our neighbors!

Many of you recall the May 31, 2013 restaurant and motel fire in Southwest Houston, which claimed the lives of four firefighters and injured more than a dozen others. Captain Dowling, a veteran of the Champions Volunteer Fire Department, lost both his legs and sustained head trauma during the tragedy.

We relate this story to you because his oldest son, Forrest, was recently recognized for graduating from Marine boot camp, following in his father's footsteps. At a party for Forrest in the Cypresswood Clubhouse, friends and supporters celebrated the accomplishment for the entire family, including Forrest's mom, Jacki, his sister Faith, and brother Foster.

Our Precinct 4 pride has never been stronger thanks to his family and ALL their Precinct 4 neighbors who continue to support "Iron Bill" in his recovery. To keep up with his progress or donate to the Dowling family, please visit donatetodowling.blogspot.com.

National Trails Day in Precinct 4

Join Precinct 4 in celebrating National Trails Day (NTD) on Saturday, June 7

Bayou Land Conservancy and REI of Willowbrook will be present at the 100-Acre Wood Preserve to work on hike and bike trails.

Volunteers from Zachry-Odebrecht plan to work at Dennis Johnston Park, Precinct 4's newest anchor park along the Spring Creek Greenway, to clean up trails.

Additionally, Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center welcomes participants to help clean up the trails and waterways in the park.

National Trails Day is held the first Saturday in June each year and is a nation-wide celebration of trails featuring numerous events and projects. Individuals, clubs, and organizations from around the country host NTD events to celebrate the 200,000 miles of trails in America. These trails offer us access to the natural world for recreation, education, exploration, and much more.

For more information about NTD and to learn more about opportunities to participate this year, call the Precinct 4 Parks Department at 281-353-4196.

Click It or Ticket
The Texas Department of Transportation is currently in the midst of their 13th annual "Click It or Ticket" campaign, which runs through June 1.

In 2013, there were 943 fatalities and 5,383 serious injuries in Texas resulting from crashes in which drivers or passengers were not wearing seat belts.

Buckling up will not only keep you from getting a ticket, but it could save your life. Everyone in a vehicle is required by law to wear a seat belt for every trip.
