April 15, 2016

I promise this is the last time you will hear about this from me.  Monday evening is the Battle of the Valley basketball tournament pitting elected officials and others from the City of Napa, County of Napa and City of American Canyon against each other to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club project to build a new clubhouse in American Canyon!  There will be shooting contests, food available for purchase, games and, of course, officials playing basketball (or something that looks a little like basketball).  Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Club. Please come join the action!  6:00 PM Monday in the gym on Benton Way.  (Note:  The Warriors don't play until 7:30, so you can come to the tournament and still see the game!).
On the Agenda...
On Tuesday, April 19th, the City Council will meet to consider several items.  First, the Council will consider changes to the recently approved Canyon Estates subdivision along Newell Drive to eliminate proposed trails because of environmental conflicts.  Second, the Council will consider awarding a contract for the design and engineering of Devlin Road extension from the current end of Devlin at the bridge to Green Island Road.  This is a significant step in completing this critical linkage on the west side of town.  Finally, and importantly, the City Council will update its five-year strategic plan and provide direction to staff regarding project priorities.  The Council adopted the five-year plan in 2014 after considerable public outreach.  The Council will review all the items completed in the last two years and update the plan for the coming five years.  This is an important discussion and I encourage you to attend. Click HERE to view the agenda.

Since our Last Update...
The City Council met on April 5th and took action on many important topics.  For the Fire District, they adopted a new Strategic Plan and authorized the purchase of a new fire engine.  For the City, they awarded a construction contract to complete a segment of the Vine Trail along American Canyon Road between Silver Oak Park and Silver Oak Trail and applied for a grant to construct sidewalks along Donaldson Way west of the highway.  Finally, they heard a presentation about our successful Cash for Grass program and authorized additional funds to keep this program going.  For more info about the program, go HERE. Click HERE to watch the meeting video.

Upcoming City Council meetings you may want to attend...
May 3rd - The Council will hear an update about water conservation and state mandated drought restrictions.  Depending on actions taken by the Governor, the City may consider changes to our own drought restrictions at this meeting.
May 10th - The City Council will discuss infrastructure including our updated infrastructure master plans and capital improvement plans for the coming several years.
May 24th - We will hold a workshop on the Broadway District Specific Plan.  This is an important step toward improving the highway corridor.  Read more about it in this recent article in the Napa Valley Register.

New Recology Carts

Soon, American Canyon will look a little better on garbage pick-up days.   Recology is working hard to get every customer new cans: gray for garbage, blue for recyclables and green for yard waste.  The gray cans have already been rolled out. During the next several weeks Recology crews will assemble the blue and green carts and then follow the collection trucks on your regular pick up day,  replacing carts as needed.  They expect to be done by the end of June.  Please call  Recology at 552-3110 with questions. Click here for the flyer.
Community Calendar

Wondering what to do this weekend?  Our new Community Calendar is the place to look!  Since its launch a few weeks ago, many organizations have added their events.  Are you involved with a group or organization that might want to post on the calendar?  Check out the instructions here.  We also plan to highlight an event or two in each Friday Update. Check out the calendar here.

You Don't Have to Cook on April 23rd!

Instead of cooking you can swing by the High School and pick up a complete, ready to eat tri-tip dinner to take home. The ACHS Athletic Boosters are sponsoring this fundraiser - check it out.
Over, Under and On Our Streets Updates

Speed Study
The City will be conducting a speed survey at 12 locations throughout town starting on Monday, April 18th. While this survey is underway you may see hoses in the roadways as shown.   This survey helps ensure that speed limits are appropriate and enforcable.  The data and recommendations for changes to speed limits will be available to the City in late May.  The City uses this data to make changes and to help direct future projects.

Street Striping
We recently purchased new striping equipment and started touching up some worn areas in town. The street crew paints all the straight lines first and then comes back to do the STOP at each intersection. This method saves staff time and resources.
