City Manager's Friday Update

February 13, 2015

This week we partnered with the American Canyon Chamber of Commerce to present the annual "State of the City" report.  Despite the fact that this breakfast event starts at 8 AM, which isn't my favorite hour of the day (I prefer a more civilized 10 AM), I always enjoy this event.  The Council and staff work so hard all year, that taking a couple hours to share what we have accomplished for the community, and discuss upcoming challenges, feels great.  It's likely pretty unreasonable to expect all 20,000 residents to attend this event, so we have printed the annual "State of the City" report and will be placing it in the mail to you any day now.  Watch that mail box, and take the time to flip through it.  I'd love to hear your comments.  In case you miss it in the mail...click HERE!  And keep reading these emails for updates.

Great Backyard Bird Count February 13-16

The GBBC is a fun project for the whole family.  The count was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on the wild birds you can see from your own backyard or any other location you choose.  In 2014, nearly 4,300 species of birds were spotted in more than 135 countries.  We have lots of birds watchers and even more birds in American Canyon who participate in the count from the Wetlands.  The website explains the project and how to participate - check it out!

On the Agenda...

The next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 17th at 6:30 PM. There are two things that might interest you.  First, the Council will be asked to award a construction contract to complete the sidewalk along the west side of Theresa Avenue, along the south end to Los Altos.  This will fill a gap where children currently have to walk in the street to get to Napa Junction Elementary School.  Second, the Council will be considering refinancing the outstanding bonds for the American Canyon Road East Assessment District.  These bonds are currently paid by all residents in the Vintage Ranch subdivision.  We are taking advantage of low interest rates and good credit conditions to save residents around $200 per year.  This discussion will also include a proposal to use some of the funds to construct a trail between Silver Oak Elementary School and Silver Oak Trail, as well as widen Newell Drive between Silver Oak Trail and Donaldson Way and sidewalk improvements along American Canyon Road East.  Lots more on the agenda - look HERE for details.
Recent Construction Near Arco Station

Lots of activity this week just north of Donaldson Way and Highway 29, next to Arco. Caltrans, big construction equipment and lots of people in yellow vests are removing old underground fuel storage tanks that haven't been used for years.  The California Water Board requires the removal to control pollution of soil and groundwater.  Although the City did not direct the work, our local watershed will benefit from the tank removal.  The work should be completed by next week.

Hi, I'm Tova! Can I Sit in Your Lap?

Yes, it's a pleasure to be graced with my presence, you're welcome. I'm Tova! I'm quite the diva and I think my quirky and peculiar personality will definitely win you over. Because let's face it, I'm definitely all that. I really like to play and get a reaction out of you, too. And I like to sit in your lap, please keep it open and available for me. So, important things to know: I don't love kids, I have lived with cats and dogs before but a home with no pets might be best for me, I was an indoor/outdoor cat and they suspect I might be a good mouser!
