January 30, 2015

Another beautiful sunny afternoon.  Wait.  It's January.  Uh oh.  Not supposed to be sunny.  Should be raining.  Although it's still early and we had big storms in December, so far this year is shaping up to be every bit as dry as last.  Not enough snow in the mountains, not enough water in the reservoirs.  This isn't boding well for summer 2015 and it looks like we will be asking you to continue your water-savings habits from last year.  If you want to learn more, we will be discussing this at the City Council meeting Tuesday evening.  Come on down to City Hall to join us, or check here (page 255) for the staff report.

City Street Activity Next Week

Re-Striping - Citywide
  • A contractor hired by the City (The Chrisp Company) will be re-striping many of our local streets starting next week.  They will be starting in La Vigne on Monday next week and it will be finished City-wide by Friday.  This a follow up to the pavement sealing program completed in summer 2013. City forces will be utilized to finalize certain locations as needed.  There shouldn't be any traffic related impact from this work.

Pothole Repair - Green Island Road

  • A contractor hired by the City (MCK Services) will be repairing the large potholes on Green Island Road next week.  This work will start on Tuesday next week and it will be finished City-wide by Friday.  The work is temporary in nature and in advance of the larger widening/reconstruction project planned for the area in the Summer of 2016.  Because the road is narrow, one-way traffic controls are needed in certain locations; drivers should expect delays and are advised to avoid the area if possible.

On the Agenda...

The next regularly scheduled City Council Meeting will be Tuesday, February 3rd at 6:30 PM. See the full agenda here. This week the City Council will consider authorizing a contract to update plans, specifications and estimates for improvements to Kimberly Park.  Work will include lowering the easterly portion of the park for flood control which could also serve as an athletic field.  The plans also contain upgrades to the westerly portion of the park; a large playground, restroom, picnic areas, basketball court, and two more small athletic fields. Read the entire staff report here (page 87).

Great Way to Participate in Local Government

Now is a wonderful time to think about getting more involved in your community.  Currently four vacancies need to be filled on City Commissions and Committees.

Open Space Advisory Committee

This committee meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM.  The committee oversees open space efforts in and around American Canyon. This position will fill an unscheduled vacancy until December, 2015.

Parks & Community Services Commission

This commission meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 PM.  Two positions are currently open with terms running through December, 2018. Applicants should have general knowledge/interest in park improvements, open space management, recreation programming and community services.

Planning Commission

This commission meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:30 PM.  Applicants should have some knowledge of land use planning, zoning, economic development and community issues in American Canyon. This term will run through December, 2018.

Applications are available here.  Contact the City Clerk at 647-4352 with questions.

Update- Hwy 29 and Watson Ranch Workshops

The City Council and Planning Commission held two workshops this week - the Highway 29 Broadway District and the Watson Ranch Specific Plan.  On Monday, January 26, approximately 50 people attended the Broadway District workshop.  Many ideas for opportunities and constraints were expressed, including a desire to improve the traffic flow and aesthetics on the highway. Elements to consider in a new plan include effective pedestrian crossings, places for neighbors to meet each other, additional landscaping and trees, new resident-serving businesses, and an overall vision of a hub for the City.

The second workshop on Tuesday, January 27 with approximately 60 people focused on Watson Ranch.  The applicant's representative, Terry McGrath, provided many examples of possible businesses and activities at a rejuvenated Basalt Mine Ruins area. Most people in attendance spoke favorably about the project's benefits, but were also concerned about traffic, water, recreation facility capacity, neighborhood parking, infrastructure financing, neighborhood density and schools.  To view the Watson Ranch specific plan, click HERE.
