Today was our third annual Senior Shadow day at the City.  We were honored to have 20 high school seniors spend their day with us, learning what we do and why it's important.  I really enjoy this annual ritual, and the opportunity to open some minds to what a career in public service is really all about.  So often we "bureaucrats" get a bad rap in the media and in newspaper blogs.  But time and time again, when people of any age actually take the time to learn what City employees and managers do all day, and all the services we provide, their eyes open bright and the "aha" moment occurs. The 20 terrific seniors we enjoyed today were no different.  We toured the wastewater plant, inspected new warehouses, visited parks, discussed potholes, considered new development ideas, considered traffic solutions, and much more.  And in the end they walked away with a much clearer picture of why we do the things we do, and why it is important to them.  And, most importantly, why they should consider a career in local government.  What fun!  I look forward to next year.
