February 14, 2014

Happy Valentine's Day!  On February 14 we generally celebrate romantic love, but love takes many forms:  love of family, love of friends, love of pets, even love of things.  Love means patience and kindness, even if you don't like every little detail.  Love means commitment to helping make things better.  Love means sacrificing occasionally for the good of others.  Love means always hoping and persevering for a good tomorrow.

Can you love a community?  Of course you can.  Does love of community just come instantly?  No, you have to work on it, just like any kind of love.  How do you love your community?  Stay informed of local issues.  Attend local events.

Get to know your neighbors and be kind to people you meet.  Use your local library.  Find a local church or other group and become an active member.  Shop at local stores and eat at local restaurants.  Be optimistic and excited about your community.  Volunteer to help others.  Be a community champion!

On the Agenda....

Our next City Council Meeting will be Tuesday, February 18th at 6:30 PM.  In addition to the regular agenda  the Council will officially proclaim February as Red Cross Month in American Canyon and will also celebrate the promotion of Firefighter Ron Prettyman to Captain and welcome two new firefighters, Kenneth Diede and Chad Pilkington.

High School Student Internships

High school students in the nine-county Bay Area are encouraged to apply for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission's (MTC) annual High School Internship Program, which seeks student applicants for summer internship positions in local transportation agencies throughout the region (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma counties). Students must be at least 16 years old by the start of the program this June and have completed the 10th grade. Additionally, students must live and go to school in the county where the position is offered. Students graduating in 2014 are eligible to apply for the internships. The deadline for submissions is Friday, February 28, 2014. (Read more)

The Drought is On--Turn Your Water Off!

On February 4th our City Council approved a Stage 1 Emergency Drought here in American Canyon. This means that we all need to start doing our part to conserve water. Like the rest of California, we are asking for a voluntary 20% reduction in water usage from our customers to address the water shortages. The recent heavy rains were a sight for sore (and dry!) eyes but unfortunately we would need to see about 5 more storms of the same rain levels to make a difference.

So, you're probably wondering, what does 20% mean for me? First, use this simple calculator to find your average annual water use and learn ways to save. Then talk with the other members of your household about the ways everyone can make water conservation a daily habit.

Visit the City's Water Conservation Page for information about free water-saving devices we offer and tips to help do your part. Also, the County of Napa has a website with links to programs throughout the county - click here to check it out.

Remember, every drop of water is important. Use water wisely.
