Community Grant Proposals
We are currently accepting proposals from community groups for 2014-15 funding requests to serve American Canyon residents. This annual funding process was established by City Council policy as a way for organizations big and small to apply for funding assistance. The policy established qualifying criteria to apply and the evaluation process. Proposals must be returned to the Parks and Recreation Department by 5 PM, January 24th. Please contact them at 648-7275 with questions and to get a copy of the application packet. More information is available on our website.

Greetings!
Well, as much as I love sunny afternoons, this is really getting out of hand. I'm not asking for snow in American Canyon or anything, just some rain would do nicely. If you see me out in my front yard looking crazy, it's just the rain dance. Like the commercial says, "Its only weird if it doesn't work." I'm willing to try. C'mon rain!

Improved Street Sweeping Begins!
As you probably know, the street sweeping program will be enhanced during 2014 with regularly scheduled sweeping of all public streets. The program began this week with a few snags but primarily success. Streets will be cleaned every two weeks on the business day following your trash pick-up. Residential sweeping will start at 6 AM so making sure cars are off the street the night before is very helpful. A complete schedule and map can be viewed on our website. Please give the Public Works Department a call at 647-4550 if you have any questions or concerns.

Water Update
The City of American Canyon purchases nearly all of its water from the State Water Project (SWP). Our annual SWP allocation is 5,200 acre feet (AF). Last year, we used approximately 3,600 AF of our annual allocation. Due to on-going drought conditions state-wide, the City has recently been notified that our SWP allocation this upcoming year will be only 5% of our annual allotment (or 260 AF). These initial SWP allocations are usually very low and the actual amount of water available will hopefully increase as weather patterns change. In addition, there are other SWP allocations available to the City this year to offset some of the losses. However, it is clear that the City will be challenged in 2014 to provide sufficient water to our residents and businesses.
It makes sense for everyone to dust off our water-conservation habits just in case these drought conditions persist. A few simple things you can do to conserve water include:
- Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth
- Run full dish- and clothes washer loads
- Take quick (not leisurely) showers
- Check for and repair plumbing and irrigation leaks
- Take advantage of City-sponsored efficiency programs such "Toilet Retrofit Program", "Washing Machine Rebate Program", and "Cash for Grass"
- Pick up some free water-saving devices at City Hall, such as: low-flow shower head, shower timer, "water miser" hose nozzle, replacement toilet flapper valve, and rain gauge with lawn watering guide
To take advantage of these water-saving programs, contact the Water Conservation Coordinator at (707) 647-4521 or by email.
