December 13, 2013
Greetings!

Another year comes to a conclusion.  Can you believe that?  Many changes here in City Hall, with plenty of new faces this year.  New emphasis on economic development, new energy focused on improving the traffic situation, new attention to our parks maintenance needs, and a fresh look at the City's budget and finances.  We have a three-year contract with the Sheriff to provide law enforcement services, a three-year agreement with our wonderful employees, and the furlough days are on their way out.  We had our annual employee holiday luncheon last week and I took the opportunity to tell my entire staff how much I appreciate their hard work and commitment, despite the changes and uncertainties at times.  But I shall say it again here:  thank you to every City employee and manager for weathering 2013.  2014, and lots of great stuff, are on the horizon.

On The Agenda....

On December 17 at 6:30 PM, the City Council will officially welcome our new Police Chief, Tracey Stuart.  The Council will also hear presentations about the City's community outreach efforts in 2013 and the status of opening up Newell Open Space to the public.  Interested to learn more about the City's Wastewater Treatment Plant?  The council will discuss options to improve capacity at the plant.  Finally, this is the Council's last meeting before the holidays, and we will enjoy the traditional singing of carols. The full agenda is available here.

Notice of Vacancies on Open Space Advisory Committee

The city is accepting applications from residents of American Canyon to fill three vacancies on the Open Space Advisory Committee. Terms are for four years. The committee meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM at City Hall. Click here for more info. Application is available here

Napa Junction Pedestrian Improvement Project to Begin in January

The City has issued a Notice to Proceed for the Napa Junction Pedestrian Improvement Project.  Hess Construction is expected to begin work after the holidays.

The Project will include storm drain improvements and new curb, gutter and sidewalk on the south side of Napa Junction Road between Theresa Avenue and Highway 29.  The Project is funded by an RSTP (Regional Surface Transportation Program) grant and Gas Tax revenue.

As you may have heard, Napa County Undersheriff Brian Banducci retired November 22, 2013, after 31 years in law enforcement. His retirement sparked many promotions at Napa County Sheriff's Office and some new faces here in American Canyon.

We will be saying good-bye, thank you, and congratulations to newly appointed Undersheriff Jean Donaldson and newly appointed Lieutenant Oscar Ortiz. We welcome our new Chief of Police, Tracey Stuart and Sergeant Rick Greenberg!

Now what do I do with this dried up holiday tree?

The holidays will be here and gone faster than we know it! You may find yourself asking a few days after the festivities what your options are to get rid of that tree. Please take a few minutes to dispose of your tree the best way (which is not dumping it on public property!). Here are a few choices:

  • Cut down to size, place in your yardwaste bin, and set out on your regularly scheduled garbage pick up day.
  • Place your tree out in the street, by the curb, before 8 AM on January 4th and our local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will be happy to haul it away and chip it into garden-friendly mulch. A donation of $5.00 is requested. The Boy Scouts request that you put cash or a check made payable to Boy Scout Troop 62 in an envelope marked BSA and attach it to your front door or front gate and leave your tree out.  The Scouts will use donations to help pay for summer camp.  Boy Scout Troop 62 and Cub Pack 178 in American Canyon appreciate your contribution and wish everyone in American Canyon a great New Year!!
