Greetings!
I noticed at Safeway the other day that Christmas shopping season is upon us again. Really? I don't even start thinking about Christmas until well after Thanksgiving. We heard from Walmart that they are planning for a big day on "Black Friday" this year. Have you started your shopping already? Let me throw out the challenge: buy at least half of your gifts in American Canyon. Looking for a new bicycle or helmet for your son? Head over to the new bike shop in Canyon Corners. How about a soothing massage for your wife (trust me, she'll appreciate it)? There are several nice spas in town. For your co-workers? Visit the new See's Candy that opened yesterday in Napa Junction. Need to ship gifts to family in Nebraska? Try the UPS store by Safeway. Need last minute wrapping paper and batteries? Try Walgreens. And, of course, you can find that new electronic gadget, or most anything else, at Walmart. I'm not trying to advertise for these businesses, just trying to make a point - you could easily buy half of your gifts here in town. So, write up that gift list and don't leave American Canyon!

On The Agenda....
The next City Council Meeting is Tuesday, November 19th at 6:30 PM. Included on the agenda this meeting is a presentation by the Public Works staff about the Signal Interconnect Project designed to synchronize and coordinate traffic signal timing on Hwy 29, Flosden Road and American Canyon Road. The project includes nine signalized intersections and the goal is to help improve traffic flow and to reduce air emissions. This should be a very informative presentation about a subject near and dear to all of us who live and work in American Canyon. The full agenda is available here.

Bocce Update

Thanks to recent donations from Jamieson Ranch Vineyards and G.L. Mezzetta a lot of progress has been made on the bocce courts at Veteran's Park. Two courts now have been filled with base rock, had the bumper boards placed and are awaiting the final layer of sand on top. We can still use volunteers - if you want to help or just learn more contact Vice Mayor Mark Joseph via email or at 647-4369.
A Grand Opening Celebration will be scheduled upon completion - stay tuned for more information!

Active Military Wall of Honor
Did you know that the City maintains a place at City Hall to honor our active military personnel? The Wall of Honor displays pictures and information about American Canyon residents, their family or loved ones currently serving our country. If you know of someone you'd like included on the wall please click here for information or call 647-5305. It's free, and a good way to share your pride.

Cottage Food Operations
Do you make the best brownies west of the Rockies? Do friends offer to pay for your strawberry pies? Have you thought about trying to make money on your cinnamon rolls, but are entirely intimidated by the maze of regulations and costs?
Here's your answer: become a Cottage Food Operator. 'Cottage Food Operations' refers to food produced by an individual in their home.
In 2013, the California Legislature adopted a state law allowing the preparation and/or packaging of certain non-potentially hazardous foods that require no refrigeration in private-home kitchens. Before you start cutting the shortening into the flour, you need a couple permits from the city and county. An ordinance approving these procedures in American Canyon was recently approved by City Council. For more information please call 647-4348.

Work to Begin on Napa Junction Pedestrian Improvement Project
Public Works expects to issue a Notice to Proceed next week for Hess Construction to begin work on the Napa Junction Pedestrian Improvement Project. Hess was awarded a contract for the project in July, but work was delayed until PG&E and AT&T could relocate their utilities. With the new power poles now in place, Hess can get started on storm drain improvements and new curb, gutter and sidewalk on the south side of Napa Junction Road between Theresa Avenue and Highway 29. The project is funded by an RSTP (Regional Surface Transportation Program) grant and Gas Tax revenue. Hess will have 60 days to complete construction. Click here for a map.
Conservation Efforts Pay Off!
Our Wastewater Treatment Plant staff have been working hard to reduce energy consumption. Their dedication to conservation is paying off; from late June through October the usage per day has been reduced from 6800 to 3800 kWh! Our planet loves them for it and so do we!
