Show of hands:  how many of you know the names of the City's six department heads and would recognize them in Safeway?  Lets see, Creighton the Parks and Rec Director, Sue in Administrative Services, Police Chief Donaldson, Rebekah the City Clerk Queen, Brent in Community Development and, uh, wait...okay, it's a trick question.  We don't have a permanent public works director right now.  But fear not!  I am pleased to introduce to you Jason Holley, our new Public Works Director.  Jason currently works for the City of Napa and has been filling in as our interim director for several months.  We have all been impressed with Jason's skills and broad knowledge and so I decided to just keep him (Sorry, Napa).  Jason will be responsible for overseeing the water, wastewater, streets, storm drain, engineering and other similar functions.  His first priorities will be streets and traffic, along with improvements to the wastewater treatment plant.  Jason's first "real" day with us will be December 2, but he is around part time until then.  Stop by and say hi.

On The Agenda....

Our next City Council Meeting is Tuesday, November 5th at 6:30 PM.  Included on the agenda this week will be a proclamation honoring the men and women of our Armed Forces, past and present in conjunction with Veteran's Day.  Are you a Veteran?  Please stop by the meeting and be recognized!  Another item of interest at this meeting will be consideration of adopting a cottage food ordinance.  A recent change in the State law allows cities to adopt local rules for the production of some types of food in private-home kitchens.  There are specific rules as to what kind of food can be produced as well as some permitting requirements.  If this subject interests you, please come to the meeting and share your views.  The full agenda lists all items that will be considered for action by the City Council on November 5th.

Are You Looking for a Way to Get Rid of a Gun?

The American Canyon Police Department is available to take your unwanted firearms and ammunition for destruction.  You can make an appointment to get rid of unwanted firearms and ammunition by calling us at 551-0600, Monday - Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM.  Please do not bring firearms to the Police Department without first making an appointment.  All firearms must be unloaded when transported to the Police Department.

Mental Health Board to Meet in American Canyon

The Napa County Mental Health Board serves the entire county.  The 15 member oversight committee reviews and evaluates the community's mental health needs, services, and facilities and advises the Napa County Mental Health Director and Board of Supervisors regarding the County's mental health programs.

We are pleased that the County Mental Health Board will hold their November meeting right here in American Canyon at City Hall.  The meeting is open to all members of the public interested in the County's mental health and is scheduled for November 18th from 4 - 6 PM.  For more information please call Napa County Mental Health Administration office at 707-299-2101.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Wins CWEA Award

The City's Wastewater Treatment Plant will be recognized as "Small Plant of the Year" at the annual awards dinner for the local Redwood Empire Section of the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) on November 22.  A "small plant" is one that is permitted to discharge less than 5 million gallons of treated wastewater per day.

The CWEA awards recognize outstanding achievement in more than 20 categories honoring water environment professionals, collection systems, and treatment plants.

The program seeks to improve the professional status of all personnel working in the field and promote public awareness of the importance of wastewater treatment to public health and the water environment.

Our Wastewater Plant staff will now submit their application to be reviewed at the state level in January 2014.  We hope they take home the state award too!
