Council Meetings

Please note: The City Council will not meet on Tuesday, August 6th. The next regular meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 20th.

Calling all Veterans!

Do you know that, as a veteran, you and your family have many programs and services available to you?  You may be entitled to medical, educational, and other benefits.  Time and time again we hear from veterans who don't know about these programs, and want to provide an easy way to share the word.  Do you think there's a need for an information and referral service here in American Canyon?  We are interested in hearing from anyone with an interest.  Reply to this email if you want more information.  Thanks!

Update on Community Visioning

The Visioning Process is in full swing!  To date we have interviewed hundreds of people asking their favorite thing about American Canyon currently and their vision for the City in the next 5 - 10 years.  We want every voice and every segment of the community heard!  Focus Groups will continue into August and our Outreach Team is visiting as many groups, organizations and community events as possible.

Check www.AmCanVision.org

for general information about the Visioning Process and for opportunities to participate.

We want to hear from YOU!

July 26, 2013
Greetings!

405.  At last count, that was the number of businesses located in the City of American Canyon.  Did you know you can get your hair done, lawn mowed, car fixed, and dog groomed here in town?  You can also have your photo taken, documents notarized, and toenails painted.  Need your landscaping freshened or plumbing repaired?  An American Canyon business owner can help with that, and much more.  So, you are asking yourself, "that's great, but how do I find these businesses?" Well...you can check the City's website here. Or, watch your mailbox.  In a few weeks you will receive a Directory from the American Canyon Chamber of Commerce.  Want a sneak peak?  Check out the Chamber's membership list, here.  Spend your money locally and support the business community.  We can't attract new businesses if we don't support the ones we have!

 Public Works Updates

Broadway Paving Work Continues

Broadway Construction

Paving work is in full swing on Broadway south of American Canyon Road, requiring lane closures between American Canyon Road and Mini Drive.  We appreciate everyone's cooperation in watching for flaggers and avoiding the construction area as much as possible.  The street is open to two-way traffic after construction hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but the roadway surface is rough and reduced speeds are advised.  For Information or to report problems, call Public Works at 647-4558.

Green Island Emergency Access Project Nearing Completion

The Green Island Emergency Access Project is wrapping up, with just a few final touches needed to complete the new asphalt concrete lane in the median between the north- and southbound lanes on Highway 29 at Green Island/Paoli Loop Road.  Please remember this access lane is for emergency vehicles only; regular traffic must continue to use the Green Island/Paoli Loop exit off northbound Highway 29.

Pavement Management Project Out to Bid

A Notice Inviting Bids was issued this week for a paving project to apply a rejuvenating seal on various streets around town to extend their useful life. The average life of a segment of pavement is about 20 years. By that time it has lived 75% of its serviceable life but has experienced only a 40% drop in quality.  After that, if there is no preventive maintenance, rapid deterioration begins to take place, and in just a few years there is another 40% drop in quality.  Experts have determined that for every $1 spent on preventive maintenance, it would cost approximately $5 to fix the same roadway once it has deteriorated to the point where major reconstruction is necessary. Streets must be in very good condition to benefit from a rejuvenating seal coat. Treating relatively new streets may be perceived as unnecessary when other streets are in worse condition, but a seal coat at the appropriate time is very cost-effective.  If the same amount of money were spent on the worst streets, it would not do nearly as much to improve the overall condition of the City's street network.

This year's Capital Improvement Budget includes funds from a Proposition 1B Grant and Gas Tax revenue for this pavement management project.  The streets we hope to treat are in areas marked on the attached map. The actual number of streets we will be able to include will be determined after bids are received on August 13. The project is expected to start in late September and will take about a month.  Watch this space for more details on the streets to be sealed and construction timelines.
