Greetings!

Some park updates to brighten your weekend...did you get out to Newell Open Space last weekend for the open house?  If not, you should have.  It is such a great place and I look forward to the day when we can open it up for regular public access!...Did you hear that the 4th of July festival is moving to Community Park II this year?  Comm Park II is much more visible and accessible than the previous location, and I anticipate a fantastic festival this year...Look for some improvements to commence at Kimberly Park in the next few weeks.  Before soccer season begins, we will be improving the irrigation adding a water fountain...Main Street Park is getting some much needed maintenance right now and should be looking good very soon...Don't forget Movies in the Park tonight at Main Street Park...This weekend looks like a great weekend for kite flying - maybe you should check out Shenandoah Park?  Have a lovely weekend.

Flora Anderson Memorial

Flora Anderson Flora Anderson was working for the newly incorporated city when I arrived in late 1993.  She was the Recreation Supervisor at the time, and served in that role until she retired in 2001.  Flora was originally the only full-time position in Recreation, overseeing a limited number of temporary employees.  She organized trips, coordinated recreational classes and helped with community wide special events, such as the Fourth of July or the annual Arts and Crafts Show.  Eventually, the department grew and she served under the first three Parks & Community Services Directors for the City.

As the wife of Ben Anderson, former Mayor and one of the original Council members for the City, being involved in the community wasn't just her job-it was something she enjoyed and did, whether it was on or off the "clock."  She was always involved in something, whether it was the Lions Club or helping out on incorporation, or convincing Ben to make more signs during his re-election campaigns!

Ben and Flora met in the service and moved to American Canyon after Ben retired from the Navy.  They bought a home here and raised their family.  American Canyon has always been special to Flora and this community will miss her now that she is gone.  A memorial will be held on Sunday, June 30th at the gymnasium on Benton Way at 1:30 pm.  The public is invited to attend.

Mark Joseph, Vice-Mayor

On The Agenda....

Next week the City Council meets on Tuesday, June 18th at 6:30 PM. The Council will consider awarding a contract for landscaping work along Napa Junction Road just north of the Rio Del Mar traffic signal. The project will include planting vines along the existing split rail fence, replacing trees, installing irrigation and repair work of the existing wall.  The work is expected to start in late July and be completed early September.

We'll also be hearing from Napa County Sheriff John Robertson about the American Canyon Police Department and continuation of contract services for the upcoming fiscal year.  Napa County Sheriff's Office has been providing law enforcement services to the City since incorporation in 1992.  The City and the community have been pleased with the level and quality of the service provided.  We are proud of our Police Department and think they do an excellent job!
