While reports differ on the baseline date for reductions (indications are it will be either 2005 or 2013), it should be noted that for both years, Japan's emissions were much higher than the internationally recognised base year 1990 or 2010.

Degradation of tropical forests could be as severe a problem as full-scale deforestation when it comes to their carbon emissions. While not as widely recognised within policymaking circles, the steady deterioration of forests across places such as the Amazon and Borneo could be responsible for 6-14% of all human-caused emissions.

When new data on global forests are published, it is always a grand opportunity to update analyses of global, regional and country trends. Global Forest Watch (GFW) has done just that. As promised, we now have the first annual update of global tree cover data based on 30×30-meter satellite data. The original dataset in this series, published by Hansen et al. and covering the period 2001-2012, has been extensively used over the past 18 months.

The Dedicated Grant Mechanism for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (DGM) is a global initiative that was conceived and developed under the Forest Investment Program (FIP) to provide grants to put funding and decision-making on project selection and funding directly in the hands of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) to set their own priorities, enhance their capacity and support initiatives to strengthen their participation in FIP and other REDD+ processes at the local, national and global levels.

This blog post highlights the Indigenous-led ethno-mapping and land use planning work that The Nature Conservancy's Brazilian team is supporting in the Amazon. The ethno-mapping process was recently completed largely due to the help of two tribes who together control 6 million hectares of forest in the Brazilian Amazon.
