This new brief explores the contribution that agriculture, forestry and other land uses (the AFOLU sector) can make to start reducing emissions immediately. We take a comprehensive approach that regards forest conservation and other land uses not as isolated activities, but as integrated systems that need to become sustainable. The brief discusses why the AFOLU sector is key, what can be achieved through action on it, existing barriers, and some ways forward.

Wise global prescriptions for managing forests abound. But we cannot combat illegal logging or deforestation-driven emissions with international analysis or diktat alone. IIED's Forest Governance Learning Group, working on the ground for over a decade, has helped drive progress in 10 countries - from recognition of community resource rights to reforestation-boosting small enterprises.

REDD+ social safeguards have gained increasing attention in numerous forums. This paper reviews the evolution of multi-level policy dialogues, processes, and actions related to REDD+ social safeguards among policy makers, civil society organizations, and within the media in Brazil, Indonesia and Tanzania, three countries with well advanced REDD+ programs. We find that progress on core aspects of social safeguards is uneven across the three countries. Brazil is by far the most advanced having drafted a REDD+ social safeguards policy.
