Tony Abbott's political opponents have seized on confirmation that 2013 was Australia's hottest year on record, arguing it should compel the prime minister to abandon his plans to scrap the nation's carbon pricing laws.

Antara News  |  01/01-14
During the past one year, the Indonesian government has made several historic policies and breakthroughs for the preservation of its forest, the worlds third largest after the Amazon in Brazil and Congos forest, if they are implemented properly.

Ecosystem Marketplaces  |  31/12-13
2013 saw global agreement on rules for implementing REDD projects under the UNFCCC and an unprecedented expansion of projects that harness private funding for forest conservation - but many of those private initiatives could backslide if buyers don't step up to purchase credits, and fast. Here's a look at our coverage from the past year.

International Science Times  |  31/12-13
A new study based on 28 years of satellite data shows how global warming impacts not just weather and climate, but also shifts the pattern forest cover.

The Guardian |  23/12-13
As political instability since the 2009 coup revives the illegal logging trade, precious bois de rose trees are now hard to find.

Jakarta Globe  |  20/12-13
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has appointed Heru Prasetyo to lead the Deforestation and Forest Degradation Plus project (REDD+), an agency tasked with curbing deforestation and improving the management of the country's natural resources.

Center for Global Development |  20/12-13
Of all the international initiatives for REDD+, the Carbon Fund of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) perhaps comes closest to the original vision of multilateral payment-for-performance-rich countries paying tropical countries for verified emission reductions realized by keeping their forests standing.  Hosted by the World Bank, The Carbon Fund brings together eight governments, two companies and a non-profit organization[1] in a $390 million partnership to purchase emission reductions from jurisdiction-level REDD+ programs in about five tropical forest countries.[2]

PR Newswire |  20/12-13
Burkina Faso, benefitting from the close support of the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank, has successfully become a member of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF). This now qualifies Burkina Faso as a REDD+* country and, with the award of a US $3.8-million grant, allows the country to put in place the necessary policies and systems needed to effectively operationalize the REDD+ mechanism.

This paper seeks to analyze local perspectives in Peruvian Amazon forest communities toward REDD and contrast those perspectives with current global and national REDD narratives. REDD is a global market-based approach to provide financial incentives for local actors to halt deforestation or to improve carbon stocks.

The political context in Indonesia will affect the success of any reform process aimed at reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+). Such reforms require strong political support because of their potentially significant medium-term impact on winners and losers in the Indonesian economy. Although REDD+ in Indonesia has strong rhetorical presidential backing, analysis of the political system suggests that such support may not be sufficient without the engagement and ownership of key players such as the parliament and the bureaucracy.

FCPF |  20/12-13
Final, December 20, 2013. The FCPF envisions the need for a Methodological Framework (MF) that would provide guidance to the development of these pilots, as noted in the Charter. The Methodological Framework complements other documents and processes that together contribute to the development and selection of REDD+ Programs.

Due to global demand for commodities, land use change and agriculture emit about one quarter of the global greenhouse gas emissions. Demand for commodities, land and the associated emissions are predicted to increase greatly in the coming decades.Though efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD+) in tropical countries have become popular, financing for these policies is currently less than $7 billion over multiple years. In contrast, agricultural production for domestic and international supply chains that are driving tropical deforestation and degradation is worth over fifteen times more annually.

Journal of Forest Research  |  12-13
In the context of growing concerns about environmental aspects of reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (acronym REDD+), we conducted a comparative analysis of three sets of globally-applicable standards and one instrument of REDD+ initiatives for safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystem services: (1) social and environmental principles and criteria, (2) REDD+ social and environmental standards, (3) climate, community, and biodiversity project design standards, and (4) strategic environmental and social assessment.

This guidebook demonstrates how community-based adaptation (CBA) can be integrated into REDD+ interventions and other mitigation activities through a 5-step approach. In addition to vulnerability analysis, a combination of participatory and analytical methods is proposed to capture the voices of multiple stakeholders at the community and broader levels and examine the linkages between adaptation interventions and REDD+.

Countries with high volumes of deforestation - and therefore a focus of REDD support - are also those with some of the poorest scores on established corruption indicators. Existing corruption poses risks to REDD goals, while the financial resources associated with REDD may create additional opportunities for corrupt activity. This U4 theme explores these issues to inform donor practice in countries receiving REDD support.
