Looking ahead....National Night Out

Please look ahead to your August calendar and block out time to participate in Lafayette/Moraga/Orinda Night Out. It's Tuesday, August 5, from 5 to 9 pm .  This event is designed to introduce neighbors to neighbors, and neighbors to their first responders (police, fire and emergency preparedness volunteers-- MNEP, CERT, Red Cross, amateur radio). The idea is to have each neighborhood sponsor some sort of outdoor "block party" event to which civic leaders (town and city council and County Supervisor) and first responders could be invited.  For more information you can contact Dennis Rein, Moraga-Orinda Fire District Emergency Preparedness Coordinator by clicking here

Cowboys and Cattlemen
An Exhibit at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley
The exhibit focuses on cattle ranching from a historic perspective. Cattle first came to California with the Spanish in 1769 and ranching has been a part of the state's economy since that time. In the San Ramon Valley, cattle were raised by the first American settlers whose ranches covered both hill and valley land. Some of the ranches which focused on cattle included Blackhawk, Dougherty, Wiedemann, Rasmussen and Elworthy. Many others had livestock as well as planting grains, hay and orchards, such as the Wood, Stone and Glass Ranches.

Conserving Water

On February 11, 2014, East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) Board of Directors unanimously approved a preliminary dry year response plan to protect the water supplies of 1.3 million East Bay residents and businesses. The Board is calling on customers to voluntarily cut water use 10 percent and has directed staff to monitor water supply and water use and to be ready to acquire supplemental water supplies if needed.

Conservation is a way of life for many EBMUD customers, and despite our late February rain, we need a concerted effort from everyone to stretch our supply.  A lot of water can be saved by fixing leaks and by managing irrigation and indoor water use.  EBMUD can help with information, rebates on water efficient customer applications, and more.  To learn more, please visit the EBMUD website by clicking here.

PG&E to Conduct  PGEpipeline

Natural Gas Pipeline Safety Work

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is working with property owners and city and county leaders to increase access to the area above its natural gas pipelines. PG&E will be contacting affected property owners in certain areas regarding structures and vegetation located above the pipeline. Items like sheds, gazebos, trees and large shrubs can interfere with PG&E's ability to maintain, inspect and safely operate the natural gas system and will need to be removed.  This pipeline safety work is taking place in communities throughout California.

PG&E's 6,750-mile natural gas transmission system delivers gas to more than four million customers throughout California.  It is common for the pipelines to travel underground and beneath city streets, sidewalks or private property. The areas above the pipeline are known as rights-of-way - a common and important aspect of safely accessing and maintaining infrastructure - which need to be kept clear. PG&E will work with property owners and city stakeholders to safely restore the areas where trees and structures need to be removed.

This program is one of several ongoing PG&E pipeline safety initiatives, including testing the strength of the pipe, installing automated gas valves, conducting leak surveys and inspecting the conditions inside the pipeline.

Most private properties do not have an underground gas transmission pipeline on their property; PG&E will directly contact property owners who are involved in the program. An interactive map showing the location of PG&E transmission pipelines can be found by clicking here.

More information about this PG&E program can be found by clicking here or calling the PG&E Land Management Department at 1-(877) 259-8314.

Interested in Being a Grand Juror?  grandjurorseal no background

Contra Costa County is now accepting applications for service on the fiscal year 2014-2015 Grand Jury. Contra Costa County's Grand Jury consists of 19 citizens.  A new Grand Jury is impaneled each year.  Grand Jurors are officers of the court, and function as an independent body under the guidance of a Superior Court judge. Apart from the investigations mandated by the California Penal Code, each county's Grand Jury decides what it will investigate.  Investigations may be initiated in response to letters from citizens, newspaper articles and personal knowledge. Contra Costa County residents are encouraged to apply for service on their Grand Jury.  Written applications are screened for eligibility.  Then judges interview potential jurors and select citizens from each supervisorial district. This process reduces the list to about 30 candidates. Jurors are then chosen by random drawing approximately one month prior to the commencement of the Grand Jury's year-long term of service, which begins July 1 of each year after a one-month comprehensive orientation program. Persons interested in applying should click here for qualifications for a Grand Jury nominee and for an application.

Contra Costa County has declared the Month of March to be Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Month. The National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse is leading a coordinated effort by several prevention agencies and organizations to sponsor activities aimed at raising awareness about the abuse and misuse of prescription drugs, promoting prescription drug safe storing and disposal, and encouraging the use of medications only as prescribed.

Awareness Month activities include; Parenting Conference Seminars at local High Schools, Teens Tackle Tobacco Conference Workshops, Police Officer Trainings, screening and discussion of the documentary, "Behind the Orange Curtain" in Orinda, San Ramon and Concord, and the "ENOUGH! Rally" on the South Steps of the Capitol in Sacramento on March 24th. The NCAPDA was founded by San Ramon Valley resident April Rovero, who tragically lost her own son Joey because of a lethal mix of alcohol and misused prescription drugs. April has devoted her life to helping educate the community, change laws, and raise awareness so that others not face what she had to. For information about these events, visit the website of The National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse by clicking here, and then click on Media Center and Events.  To register for the Rally, click here. Or contact April directly at info@ncapda.org or 925-980-5490.

You can help with the safe disposal of your unused and unwanted prescription drugs by dropping them in a pharmaceutical collection bin in your community.  Not only does it keep them out of the wrong hands, but it keeps drugs from entering our water supply through the sewer system. Changes made to Parking Near srvhsparking
San Ramon Valley High School

At their February 18, 2014 meeting, the Danville Town Council voted unanimously in favor of instituting a No Parking Zone on Glen Road between Van Gordon Place and Del Amigo Rd. The parking restriction will be enforced between 8:30 a.m. - 9:30a.m. and 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. on days that school is in session. The San Ramon Valley High School is home to approximately 2,200 students.  For the 2013-14 school year, SRVHS has 506 Seniors, 558 Juniors, and 515 Sophomores.  A majority of these students are of driving age.

There are only 265 available parking spaces on campus.  While some students carpool, utilize public transportation, walk, or are dropped off by parents - it still leaves a huge deficit of available parking spaces for student drivers parking near the school.  Therefore, hundreds of SRVHS student drivers attempt to find available off-site parking spaces every day. Many of these students will often park on residential streets adjacent to the high school, leading to periodic conflicts within those neighborhoods.

The Danville Police Department has received some complaints of students moving garbage cans (resulting in the inability for the trash to be removed by the solid waste provider), vehicles parked across driveways (limiting access to residents' access to their home), or in unsafe locations. When a problem does occur and the Danville Police are called, the offending student is notified and the problem corrected.  The Danville Police also educates student drivers on responsible driving and parking habits.   Young drivers are encouraged to park safely and treat neighborhoods respectfully.

There are hundreds of young drivers arriving and leaving the area around SRVHS every day. Even with the large volume of traffic, incidents requiring police involvement are comparatively low.  Much of the credit belongs to respectful student drivers who are courteous and understanding of their surroundings.  In addition, SRVHS students are also strongly encouraged to participate and take advantage of the "Carpool to School" and "Student Transit Ticket" incentive programs offered through the 511 Contra Costa Transportation Demand Management Program click here  for more information.

Students are eligible to receive incentives such as gas cards for carpooling, and free transit tickets for riding County Connection buses.  Last year, approximately 61 SRVHS students participated in the 511 School Carpool program, and 70 students participated in the Transit Ticket program.  For more information or to participate in these valuable programs, please contact the San Ramon Valley's 511 Contra Costa representative at (925) 973-2650, or click here.

Any person with questions regarding parking near the high school is encouraged to contact School Resource Officer Vince Richards at (925) 314-3700 or click here to email.
