Disaster Preparedness: December Safety Tips

Winter seasons bring unpredictable conditions that can change at a moment's notice.  Rain, hail, snow and ice conditions all exist in the San Ramon Valley and places we travel.  Be prepared to "brave the elements" at home and on the road.  Consider the following steps to better prepare yourself.
  • Clean gutters and storm drains around your property.
  • Insulate your outdoor exposed plumbing and water fixtures.
  • Request a professional inspection for older roofs.
  • If traveling to the mountains remember emergency items including chains, small snow shovel, ice scraper, food and water.
  • Before traveling check 5-1-1 for road conditions.

Contra Costa County Employees Launch the
10th Annual Holiday Food Fight to Raise Funds for the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solanofoodfight

Did you know that currently at least one in every four people struggles with hunger (one-third of whom have to choose between paying for food or housing) in Contra Costa County? Or that the number of those in our county who go hungry has increased by 50% since 2008?

In an area as wealthy as ours, these numbers are horrific; but now that same 25% of our population is about to be hit by a new double whammy. First, recipients of CalFresh, our state's name for the food stamp program, will see a 5% decline. This monthly reduction of $36 per family of four has taken place as of November 1st. Second, Congress is also considering a proposal to reduce expenditures on all food stamp programs, including CalFresh, by $40 billion over the next ten years. This will be devastating, and will place enormous new burdens on our and other food banks.

Most of the people receiving food aid (both through CalFresh and through agencies working with the Food Bank) are working poor. Others cannot work because of health or other issues. Even military families must seek assistance from the Food Bank and agencies. Circumstances vary for everyone.

Contra Costa and Solano county employees have addressed this dilemma for nine years now, raising over one million dollars to date to support Food Bank programs, especially theFarm2Kids and Community Produce programs. Rather than ask people to give nonperishable goods, we ask employees and their friends and family to donate money in order to assist the Food Bank's purchases of fresh produce (which now accounts for nearly half of the food distributed).

You too can join this Food Fight by donating online; click here and make the selections as in the photo at left. The link will be up through the end of the year.

It's a big anniversary-so let the challenge begin for the tenth time! And you can help Contra Costa County employees meet a very big goal of raising one million dollars in cumulative funds raised for the Food Bank; we're just $160,000 away and we hope to get there by the end of 2014. You can help us do that by donating today.

White Pony Express: Delivering
Food to Those in Needwhitepony

White Pony Express identifies existing neighborhood programs in Contra Costa County that need food to feed the hungry. They pick up food from donors and deliver it quickly to those in need.  The service is free of charge and a 100% volunteer program. They accept food donations of all kinds and sizes, including groceries, shelf goods, dry goods, meat products, produce, dairy, baked goods and prepared foods. Since opening the service on September 22, White Pony Express has made almost 700 deliveries of food to 23 different organizations, providing food to those in need throughout the County. Over the past month they have averaged about 11 deliveries a day and this past Monday delivered 1,400 pounds of food consisting mostly of fresh produce.

To donate food to the White Pony Express, you can call them at 925-322-0604 or email them at click here.  When leaving your message, give them your name and location, type of food and quantity to be picked up, when and where to pick up, and anything else they should know.
Many in our community cannot afford to feed themselves properly for temporary periods of time.  Children, seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income families often do not get enough nutritious food.  For some, donated food can free them to pay rent and avoid becoming homeless.

San Ramon Police Receive Grant
to Improve Traffic Safety sanramonpolice

The San Ramon Police Department has been awarded a $36,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.  The grant will fund a year-long program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on roadways in San Ramon through special enforcement and public awareness efforts.  The grant will aid in the city's ongoing effort to improve traffic safety and the quality of life.  In California, traffic deaths declined by nearly 39 percent between 2006 and 2010, however they rose by 2.6 percent in 2011.  State and federal officials anticipate that figures will show another rise for 2012.  DUI deaths remain the largest segment, at nearly at nearly 30 percent of all traffic fatalities.  Recent trends show increases in two new categories - distracted driving and drug-impaired driving.

Moraga Rotary Make and Donate Christmas Stockings to Children in Juvenile Halljuvenilehall

On Christmas Day, more than 300 children who are held in Juvenile Hall will be given Christmas stockings filled with goodies, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Moraga which has performed this service project for more than a decade.  These stockings are often the only Christmas gift these children will receive.  Treats in the stockings included a deck of cards, a pair of socks, puzzle books, candies, shampoos, soaps, and cosmetics.

On November 3, girls at Juvenile Hall participated with Rotarians in the decorating of the stockings, so each stocking is unique. They will be filled with goodies on December 15 by Rotarians and friends.  Members of the Interact Club at Campolindo High School and the Rotaract Club at St. Mary's College have been invited to help stuff the gifts into the stockings. This project takes a while to bring together, Co-Chairs Barbara Bruner and Debbie Roessler work closely with Janet Young, the Executive Director of the Juvenile Hall Auxiliary, who coordinates the activity with Juvenile Hall staff.
