Earthquake Planning

This October 21st, marks the 145th year since the HaBe Ready SRVyward Fault last ruptured.  On average the fault has moved every 140 years.  The key to surviving any emergency or disaster situation is planning.  Take the time to discuss what you hope to do with everyone at home and work.  Take a moment to identify what each of you will do to survive and recover quickly.
  • What escape routes avoid falling hazards?
  • How do you help family members, neighbors and co-workers with disabilities?
  • How do you plan for pets?
  • What supplies do you store for 7 days?

San Ramon Creek Clean-up
Arundo

Join the Friends of the San Ramon Creek on October 5, from 9:00 a.m. - noon  when they meet at 1 Meadowbrook Lane & El Poral in Danville to clear the invasive giant reed, Arundo, from a creek bank south of El Portal Bridge at the boundary of Danville and Alamo.  Arundo, commonly known as Giant Reed, or Giant Cane, grows extremely fast; it can grow up to 4 inches per day, and reach 30 feet tall. It often colonizes stream banks and damp areas and thrives in many of our local areas. Arundo is a fire hazard that can burn even when green. Its height and dry leaves and stalks make it a fire-ladder that enables flames to reach up into nearby trees. It can turn stream channels, which are usually damp, fire-resistant barriers, into pathways for fire to travel.  For more information, click here to email Jennifer Stern or  click here for information about Arundo.

Comments received will also be conveyed to the consultants working on this project.

Creek and Channel Safety Awareness Month

Hidden Dangers of Contra Costa County's

Flood Control Systemfloodcontrol

The Board of Supervisors has declared October to be Creek and Channel Safety Awareness Month. Please take advantage of this opportunity to speak to your children and friends about the dangers of fast moving storm water and the almost certain fate that awaits anyone who goes into rain swollen creeks and channels. The flood control channels are part of our community's infrastructure and, like freeways or railroad tracks, should never be used for recreation.

The channels are designed to drain storm water from our communities and take it swiftly "out to sea", preventing flooding. Water from the surrounding watershed area first gathers in small streams and creeks and then flows into the large channels for a swift trip to the Delta, Carquinez Strait and San Pablo Bay. This storm water can pass from small open creeks to large underground tunnels; from narrow rocky stream beds to wide concrete channels; all the while gathering debris, speed, volume and power. At key points along the way, large structures have been built into the system to slow down the water and control the power. This allows the water to flow back into wide earthen channels without destroying their natural habitat or causing erosion. These structures are an efficient tool in managing our flood waters but can be deadly for humans.

This annual campaign is to remind us that, like thinking of sunscreen in the Spring, we must become aware of the dangers around us and take the necessary steps to educate ourselves and our children to avoid them. Appreciate the great job they do for our community, but leave the channels to storm water and Stay Out, Stay Alive! For more information please click here.

Alamo Rotary Club Names Dick Olsen
Citizen of the Year
  dickolsen
The 2013 Alamo Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Dick Olsen during the 31st Annual Alamo Music and Wine Festival sponsored by the Rotary Club of Alamo. Dick and his family have been in Alamo since 1975.  Over the years, Dick has been instrumental in a number of projects and events. He joined the Alamo Rotary in 1985 and has served on numerous positions for the club.

Dick led the Stone Valley/I-680 interchange beautification project from start to finish. He conceived the project back in 2010, and recruited and worked closely with the landscape architect. He raised funds to pay for the plants and gardeners and oversaw the many meetings, emails and telephone conversations it took to gain final approval from Caltrans. He then ordered the trees and plants and turned the project into reality. Once the project was approved and funded Dick led the effort to plant  trees and shrubs, install the irrigation system, spread tanbark, kill  weeds, and fertilize  plantings.

Alamo applauds Dick's dedication, gentle guidance, and unselfish devotion to the improvement of the I-680 interchange, which will benefit all who live in Alamo long into the future. To this day he continually monitors and manages the project.

How Do We Keep Our Young Drivers Safe?

Enroll is the CHP's Start Smart Program

smartstart

Remember when high schools offered a class to teach driver safety?  Students were required to listen to an instructor talk about traffic laws, watch "Red Asphalt," and learn about the consequences of poor driving choices.  With the ever growing popularity of online Driver's Ed, now it's up to the busy parents to teach driver safety to their children.  What resources are available to help them?

No parent wants to be given the news that their teenage son or daughter has been killed in a horrific traffic collision.  The statistics are frightening.  Teen drivers are found at fault in 66% of ALL FATAL collisions that they are involved in, although they only represent 4% of the state's licensed drivers.  The leading cause of DEATH for Americans 15 to 20 years old is motor vehicle collisions.  What can a parent do to prevent this horrible tragedy from happening to their teen?

The California Highway Patrol, Contra Costa Office conducts a two hour driver safety education class called Start Smart, which targets new and future licensed teenage drivers 15 through 20 years of age and their parents or legal guardians. To enroll yourself and your teen in one of the upcoming Start Smart classes contact the California Highway Patrol, Contra Costa Office at (925) 646-4980.  The next available classes will be at the CHP - Contra Costa Office, located at 5001 Blum Road, Martinez, California 94553.  The class starts at 6:00pm for the following 2013 dates: October 7th and 8th, November 4th and 5th, and December 2nd and 3rd.

alamoaobAlamo Area of Benefit Study Update

By Michael McDonald, Chairman, Alamo Municipal Advisory Council

A study has been underway in Alamo for the past year to update what is called the Alamo Area of Benefit Project list. The Alamo Area of Benefit ("AOB") was formed by the County Board of Supervisors in 1985 to provide for the collection of funds from new development in Alamo to help pay for roadway and other transportation related improvements needed to accommodate the new development. Following adoption of the AOB, a list of improvement projects was developed and this list has been periodically modified and updated since then. It was last updated in 1998, so at the urging of Supervisor Candace Andersen, the county Public Works Department began the current update at the end of 2012.

An important milestone was reached in this process at the end of August when a new project list was approved by the Alamo MAC for recommendation to the Board of Supervisors. This list of projects was developed after public input was received at three community meetings and presented to the public and the MAC at a fourth meeting in August. It now moves on to the Board of Supervisors.

Three important priorities came out of the public meetings which were reflected in the recommended project list. These were:

  • Pedestrian safety downtown and around schools
  • No desire to expand or increase capacity on Danville Boulevard
  • Protect trees and other aspects of Alamo's semi-rural character

The priority relating to no expansion of Danville Boulevard was probably the most talked about and of most concern to Alamo residents who attended the meetings. This has been a long standing issue and reflects a concern that some county and regional transportation planners see Danville Boulevard expansion as a way of relieving congestion on the freeway. But at least as far as the AOB project list is concerned, there will be no expansion or increase in capacity.  In fact, a project from the previous AOB list involving further work at the intersection of Danville Boulevard and Stone Valley Road which would have allowed more traffic onto Danville Boulevard was removed altogether.

Consistent with the priorities that came out of the public meetings, the new projects recommended by the MAC include:

  • Pedestrian safety improvements on Danville Boulevard in the downtown area
  • Pedestrian and bicycle improvements on Livorna and Stone Valley Road
  • Pedestrian safety improvements at Stone Valley Middle, Alamo Elementary, and Rancho Romero Elementary Schools
  • Safety improvements at the intersection of Danville Boulevard and Hemme Avenue

In addition to these new projects, the list includes projects related to bicycle and pedestrian safety on Stone Valley Road and Miranda Avenue carried over from the prior list.

October 26th is National

Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

 drugtakeback

Saturday, October 26th, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will have another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications. All of the city Police Departments in District 2 accept prescription medications.  The Valley Station in the Alamo Plaza now offers locked "Pharmaceutical and Sharps Disposal" boxes inside its office lobby.  Typically, it is open Monday through Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Volunteers staff the office, so it is always best to call ahead to ensure the lobby is open at: (925) 837-2902. You can also contact the Prescription Drug Call Center at (800) 882-9539 to locate a collection site near you.

Requirements for the "Pharmaceutical Disposal" box are as follows:

  • Prescription pills must be removed from original container and placed in a sealed plastic bag; zip lock bags are ok.
  • Items that are not accepted in the "Pharmaceutical Disposal" container are:  syringes, needles, lancets or pen needles, aerosol cans, thermometers, controlled substances, personal care products and/or liquid or tubed medications.

Requirements for the "Sharps Disposal" box are as follows:

  • Must be in a rigid, sealed container for needles, lancets and similar items; plastic soda bottles work well as the sharps container can accept 2-liters bottles.

YOUR INPUT IS NEEDED ON THE CITY'S HOUSING ELEMENT UPDATE

State law requires every city and county in California to adopt a Housing Element as part of its General Plan. Unlike other mandatory general plan elements, the Housing Element is required to be updated every eight years and is subject to statutory requirements and mandatory review by the State's Housing and Community Development Department (HCD).  In the Bay Area, local jurisdictions must complete updates to their Housing Element by January 31, 2015.  San Ramon has begun the process of updating the City's Housing Element and is seeking community input.

The regional governing agency, the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) is responsible for developing a methodology to distribute the region's housing need to each jurisdiction.  San Ramon's most recent housing allocation for the period of 2009 to 2014 is 3,463 units.  ABAG has determined that in the upcoming housing cycle between 2014 to 2022 it should be lower; San Ramon must develop a housing plan that will be able to accommodate 1,417 housing units.  The significant reduction in units allocated is in mainly contributed to a shift in regional goals to build housing closer to transit.  While San Ramon is not obligated to construct these housing units, they are required to identify where such housing could be developed and process development applications, if requested.  The City plans to use the existing, unbuilt housing opportunity sites as a starting point for developing our housing plan.  Ultimately, all land use decisions are made by the City and its elected leaders.

With high land costs and recent changes in the housing market, it will be challenging for all jurisdictions in the Bay Area to meet the State's goals.  However, San Ramon is optimistic that their Housing Element will successfully address these challenges and is encouraging residents' participation in the process.  They want citizens' opinions and suggestions on topics such as affordable housing, planning for the needs of an aging population and housing stock, and what the City's housing priorities should be.

Public hearings on the Housing Element Update are scheduled to begin in Spring 2014.   Comments and/or suggestions can be directed to planning@sanramon.ca.gov or  (925) 973-2560.

Forest Home Farms Historic Park & Glass House Museum Open for Fun on the Farm

Come to Forest Home Farms Historic Park and the Glass House Museum for Fun on the Farm from 10am to 2pm on the second Saturday of each month. On these days you can step back in time to explore the site, enjoy tours, and participate in a free activity from days gone by.

The theme for October 12, 2013 will be Horse Power to Gasoline Power Imagine starting your trip by hitching up the horses instead of stepping on the gas. The 1900's brought a switch from animal power to gasoline power. Visit the farm to see examples of vehicles and equipment from both eras.

Horseshoes, reins, bridles, saddles and hay...take a look at what was involved when horsepower really meant horses. Meet a farrier who will demonstrate what is involved in preparing shoes for horses. Then trace the changes in automobiles and engines from the early days through the 1950's as you view antique engines that powered everything from water pumps to washing machines, and see cars displayed by several car clubs. Among them will be the Bay Area Horseless Carriage Club with cars from 1916 and earlier, the Pacific Bus Museum with buses from 1945 and 1955, and the Tri-Valley Classic Chevy Club showing cars from the mid 1950's.

Alamo Women's Club at Workalamowomens

On September 23, 2013, the Alamo Women's Club (AWC) hosted an Emergency Preparedness Fair.  Attendees met representatives from the San Ramon Valley (SRV) Fire Protection District, SRV C.E.R.T, SRV HeartSafe Committee and learned hands-only CPR and how to properly use a fire extinguisher.  Contra Costa County also participated by sending staff from the Office of Emergency Services and Community Warning System who were readily available to answer any questions related to Alamo and County emergency preparedness.  Valley Station Deputy Michael Carson brought along Alamo's new radar display trailer, recently purchased by the Alamo Police Services Advisory Committee and Citizen's Advisory Committee (P-5, Round Hill) for all to see.  PG&E offered demonstrations, with the assistance of model towns that make the average person appreciate all that PG&E does for their users!  One demo especially reminded us to call 811 to Know What's Below, before you dig!  AT&T offered the opportunity for fair goers to simulate driving while texting - definitely not recommended, simulation or not!  Alamo Animal Hospital provided discount micro-chipping and information about how to help return our beloved pets home after an emergency.  Liberty Mutual provided parents with take home fingerprint and DNA kits, an unfortunate necessity in this day and age.  Ameriprise also participated and for those of you who are not familiar, this organization makes annual donations to the American Red Cross Disaster-Relief Fund, which helps lead to prompt funding in the event of a disaster.  And last, but certainly not least, Ready Care Emergency Supplies was on hand to help with the creation of an emergency supply kit that would work best for your family.  The Alamo Women's Club motto is:  "A place where women come together to work toward a better community for all."  And they most certainly achieved that goal by hosting this event!  Thank you Alamo Women's Club!

Did you know?  The Alamo Women's Club supports 12 local charities through donations, volunteer work and community awareness?  And that they have a scholarship program that supports our local schools, including San Ramon Valley High, Monte Vista High, Del Amigo High, Diablo Valley College and Youth Homes Foster Care?  For more information about how you can be part of a dynamic group of ladies, visit their website at:

Street Smarts Education at Alamo Elementary streetsmartsalamo

On September 23, Street Smarts held two traffic safety assemblies at Alamo Elementary School, serving approximately 330 students. The first assembly was for kindergartners, first, second, and third graders. Sam the Safety Car, a robotic car, helped teach these younger students about how to stay safe when walking and biking. Lessons included using the Stop, Look, and Listen steps before crossing the street and the importance of wearing a helmet while biking, skateboarding, or riding a scooter. The kids loved Sam! Street Smarts held a second assembly for grades 4 to 5. These students watched a video called Street Smarts News, which features two student anchors who teach traffic safety with the help of local police officers. Overall, the children had a lot of fun and learned great information about how to stay safe out on our streets. Street Smarts is a traffic safety education program serving the San Ramon Valley. The program is a collaboration between the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, the County of Contra Costa, the City of San Ramon, and the Town of Danville. Assemblies will be held at elementary schools throughout the School District this year.  For more information about Street Smarts programs,  click here.

Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary

Rob Roy is a sailing canoe, originally designed by John MacGregor in 1865 and named after his famous Scottish outlaw/hero grandfather.
