Board of Supervisors Proclaim April as Annual Alcohol Awareness Month in
Memory of Casey Goodwinalcohol

Candace Andersen - BOS Alcohol Awareness Month

On March 12, 2003, 20-year old Casey Goodwin was struck head on by an 18-year old drunk driver. She died the following day. Casey Goodwin had dedicated her young life to prevention programs including those dealing directly with alcohol-related issues. Moved by the loss of Casey, former classmates wanted to take action by addressing drinking and driving and underage drinking. This was the catalyst for Casey's Pledge, which encourages youth to live a healthy lifestyle by committing to staying alcohol free or never drinking and driving, and never getting into a car with a driver who has been drinking. School systems have taken this message to heart and have implemented activities in their schools and communities to promote safe and healthy spring break, prom, and summer vacations with Casey's Pledge at signing rallies and events.

To underscore the seriousness of alcohol abuse and the dangers it presents to our youth, Contra Costa County proclaimed April 2013 as Annual Alcohol Awareness Month in memory of Casey Goodwin.  Supervisor Andersen, joined by all members of the Board of Supervisors, presented the signed proclamation to Thania Balcorta, Program Coordinator for Friday Night Live, and Monte Vista High School Students Andrea Tom, Lucy Holmes-Higgins and Sarah Rumfelt at the April 16th Board meeting.

 Canyon Fire Safety Plan Meetingcanyonfire

Supervisor Candace Andersen joined with Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District, Cal Fire, and the American Red Cross in Canyon on Wednesday, April 10th to discuss creating a fire safe plan for the Canyon community. Supervisor Andersen is an advocate for community members becoming CERT trained because in the event of a natural disaster, community members are going to need to rely on each other for at least 48 hours following an event as emergency responders will likely be unavailable. Much discussion regarding community emergency training, clearing a defensible space around dwellings as well as evacuations routes were discussed. The smart-phone app Pulse Point, which was developed by San Ramon Valley Fire,  can be downloaded for free that will allow you to receive emergency updates from Moraga-Orinda FPD and Contra Costa FPD. In addition, everyone is encouraged to sign up to receive Contra Costa County Community Warning Messages via text message and/or email by  clicking here. Thank you to Jonathan Goodwin for organizing such a wonderful meeting!

Parkmead Community Traffic Meeting parkmead
Parkmead Community Traffic Meeting
From Left to Right - City of Walnut Creek Traffic Engineer Rafat Raie, Contra Costa County Senior Traffic Engineer Monish Sen, Lieutenant Jay Hill, Walnut Creek Police Department and Officer Thomas Maguire of the CHP

On Wednesday, April 10, 2013, residents fromthe community of Parkmead participated in a Neighborhood Traffic Management Program (NTMP) initiated by Supervisor Andersen's office.  In the previous months, extra patrol requests were made by this office to the California Highway Patrol after numerous complaints of speeding vehicles and "hoards" of bicyclist running stop signs on a regular basis, putting residents and their children at risk.  An NTMP was offered to the community, in an effort for county and city officials to hear complaints, identify problem areas, and engage the community in problem solving ideas.  There was a four person panel, consisting of County and City Traffic Engineers, local law enforcement and CHP.  Over 80 residents were in attendance and were able to share their concerns and have questions answered.

Members from the Parkmead Community Association (PCA) were instrumental in facilitating this event.  PCA is not a homeowners association, per se, but an informal association of 600 neighborhood homes.  Parkmead is located in both County and City boundaries, with the majority of the homes situated within unincorporated Walnut Creek.  For more information about the County's NTMP program, click here .
