Holiday Helpers Warehouse a Big Success

The holidays are celebrated in a multitude of ways, but some families in our Contra Costa communities are not able to enjoy the time as they struggle to provide "the basics" to survive. Contra Costa County has, for the last fifteen years, helped thousands of families not only survive the holidays, but feel some of that warm and compassion we all hope for. The Employment and Human Services Department (EHSD) sponsors the Holiday Helpers Warehouse which connects donors in the community with people in need. Donors include service groups, corporations, churches, schools and individuals from all over the county. This program is organized by the Volunteer & Emergency Services unit and families are referred to this program by their social workers within EHSD earlier in the season. This year, Holiday Helpers Warehouse was able to serve almost 400 families with warm clothing, blankets, toys and books for the children, board games, art kits, food gift cards and bags of food - all new and donated by caring people.

Candace with Jean Muir and Sharon Burke
|
The "Warehouse" was open on December 17th & 18th in Pleasant Hill, and on December 20th in Richmond. It was set up in a large conference room and volunteers acted as "shopper elves" to match the donations received with each family's requests and needs on their referral. Families receiving assistance came at their designated time to pick up their goodies, and were surprised at the generosity. Comments such as "Thank you - my child wouldn't have had anything if it weren't for this!" are heard frequently and many heart-felt hugs are exchanged. Supervisor Andersen lent her shopping skills to the event this year and was able to see first-hand the synergy of people in need connecting with people who want to help.
Many thanks go out to all in the community who donated their time, efforts, toys and more to help others in need this holiday season. Special thanks go to the volunteer HHW committee of Jean Muir, Judy Pieralde and Sharon Burke!
For more information, or to volunteer or donate for 2013, please contact Anne Struthers, EHSD at (925) 521-5062.

County Connection Bus Tracker Debuts
County Connection has rolled out Bus Tracker, a system that provides real time information about where the bus is and when it will arrive at the bus stop.
Bus Tracker has been installed on all County Connection's fixed route buses and the software uses GPS location data to predict arrival times. Buses transmit their location every thirty seconds via the Sprint network enabling Bus Tracker to predict arrival times and make bus location information available to the public on the web. All you need is access to the internet to see where buses are on-route, and to see when the next bus is predicted to arrive at your stop. The map view uses the familiar Google map as a base to show buses progressing along the transit routes. Riders can view the upcoming bus arrival times by selecting any bus stop in the system.
Now that customer service agents can see where buses are and what the predicted arrival time is, even riders without access to the internet will get more accurate information. Prior to being able to use Bus Tracker customer service agents relied on the "scheduled" times. Now they can see if a bus is caught in traffic.
Click here, and then click the Bus Tracker button to get started or to set up a personalized account for arrival alerts.
County Connection operates a fleet of 112 clean diesel and 9 hybrid diesel buses in fixed route service and 63 gas powered vans in door-to-door service. For assistance with Bus Tracker or get information on bus routes from Customer Service staff, please call (925) 676-7500.

Moraga Rotary Collects and Disposes of 16 Tons of Electronic Waste
Rotary Club of Moraga's e-waste collection project, begun in September 2009, has collected 32,752 pounds of electronic waste disposing of it in compliance with California law. Not only are they keeping harmful electronic waste out of landfills, but they also provide a document shredding service. Held semi-annually at the Moraga Shopping Center courtesy of the Bruzzone family, the seven collection events have collected an average of 2.3 tons. Interestingly, the mix of waste is changing. There aren't as many large screen TV's as in previous years, but more boxes to be shredded now.
On September 8 citizens dropped off their e-waste at the Moraga Shopping Center at the site where the Farmers Market is held on Sundays.Moraga Rotary workers on that day were Chairman Rich Render, Tony Schoemehl, Kevin Reneau, Lad Lynch, Frank May, Cliff and Mary Elena Dochterman, Grant Shoaf, Herb Wehmeyer, & Lou and Debbie Roessler. They were reminded of the old Tennessee Ernie Ford popular song, "16 Tons", and were humming it to help meet this goal. The Moraga Rotary club will be doing another e-waste event next fall. If you have a device you need to recycle before then, click here for a list of places you can go.
The Rotary Club of Moraga is a local service club within Rotary International that meets most Tuesdays at noon at St. Mary's College. For information, please call President Frank May at 925-376-8195.

Elder Financial Abuse - Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones

Elder Financial Abuse has reached epidemic proportions in the Country and in our County. Studies have indicated that only one in 44 cases are ever reported. While there may be many reasons for not reporting, the fact remains that many of our seniors are being exploited financially by others, either known or not known persons. The January 2013 issue of Consumer Reports put the spotlight on this issue and how serious it is to our aging population. Contra Costa County is addressing this issue. The CASE Program has been operating in the County for several years now. CASE stands for Communities Against Senior Exploitation. This program provides useful information to seniors on ways in which they can protect themselves from financial scams. CASE director, Shirley Krohn, works with senior centers, assisted living facilities, faith based organizations and many others to provide education and prevention tools for seniors to be their own advocates to protect their assets from perpetrators of these crimes. If you are interested in arranging a CASE presentation, please click here. Read the Consumer Reports article by clicking here .

Contra Costa County Needs Volunteers to Help Count the Homeless
Contra Costa County's biennial homeless count, which helps our community assess needs and secure vital state and federal funds, is in search of volunteers. A new web-based form makes it easy for people to sign up for the count. On January 30, hundreds of volunteers will meet at 6 a.m. for a 30-minute orientation before fanning out across the county in cars to tally homeless persons.
Volunteers are needed from East, West and Central County, and must be at least 18 years old. They are required to attend a one-hour training session one week before the count.
More than 7,000 homeless persons, many of whom are children, rely on services provided by the Homeless Program of Contra Costa Health Services and other community-based organizations. The point-in-time count gives service providers baseline data to better understand the scope of homelessness so more effective responses can be developed to meet the existing needs.
To volunteer click here, or email by clicking here, or call 925-313-6124. Or click here for the flyer.
