The Great ShakeOut  in Lamorinda

Supervisor Candace Andersen got a first-hand look at emergency preparedness as she traveled with Moraga Orinda Fire District (MOFD) Fire Chief Randy Bradley during the Lamorinda ShakeOut on October 18. ShakeOut In the Sarge Littlehale Community Room at the Orinda City Hall, she sat in while City of Orinda, MOFD, and Red Cross staff participated in this local version of the Great California ShakeOut.  Candace was also with Chief Bradley at the MOFD Station 42, where nearly 20 Moraga staff members took part in the drill.

For four hours, the participants played the roles they would assume in the City's Emergency Operations Center (EOC) just as if a disaster had occurred.  Dennis Rein, MOFD Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, facilitated the exercise involving a 7.7 magnitude earthquake, a landslide, fires, collapsed buildings, and blocked streets.  The purpose of this table top exercise was to test the City's communications, resource allocation and Emergency Operations Centers' (EOC) management capabilities, and gave both Moraga and Orinda an opportunity to evaluate their Emergency Operations Plans.

Viewing the exercise drove home the point that we all must take our own emergency preparedness seriously.  Candace commented "In the first few days following an emergency, first responders and local government will be stretched thin and not in a position to help us.  We will have to depend upon ourselves and our neighbors immediately following an incident." Having working smoke alarms is the best way to provide an early warning for your family and increases your chance of surviving a fire by nearly fifty percent.Changeyourbatteries

This Sunday, November 4, San Ramon Valley Firefighters want to remind residents to change the batteries in all their smoke alarms when they change their clocks for daylight savings time. Take a few minutes to protect your family and follow these simple life saving tips:

  • Place a smoke alarm on every level of your home, in every bedroom and in the hallways outside sleeping areas.
  • Check smoke alarms monthly by pushing the test button. If you cannot reach the button use a broom handle.
  • Change the batteries in your alarms twice a year - remember, change your clocks, change your batteries.
  • Hard-wired smoke alarms with battery back-ups still need to be tested monthly and batteries replaced yearly.
  • Teach children what the smoke alarms sound like and what to do when they hear one.
  • Never disable a smoke alarm or remove the batteries. Most of us wouldn't ride in a car without a working seatbelt, and we should not sleep in a house without working smoke detectors.
  • Smoke alarms wear out over time. Replace yours if it is over 10 years old.
  • Think green, remember that used batteries and old smoke alarms should recycled.
