Creating Independent Students While Supporting Them as Children
Isn't that the knife edge we have to walk? How do we foster independence in our students while appropriately supporting their needs as children? Of course, the answers to this question are at least as numerous as the students we have at Birchview.

We are always looking for ways to partner with families and this is one of those opportunities. We ask families to make sure students are on time in the morning; not too early because we don't have supervision for students (unless they are in Home Base) and not too late because students miss class time. Often, our most important social and emotional instruction happens first thing in the morning with morning meetings in classrooms.

Please have your child to school no earlier than 8:15 which is the time supervision starts. Students can have breakfast or just hang out for a few minutes before the 8:20 bell when students enter the building. This gives them ample time to unpack their bags, hang up jackets, order lunches and be ready for school starting at 8:30.

The ten minutes between 8:20 and 8:30 are a great time to let students build independence. If you like to walk your child into school, please feel free to do so, but let them walk to class independently. Say your goodbyes in the car, out front, or in the foyer. Letting them walk to class and taking care of morning rituals helps them build the independence they will need throughout their lives.

Academic Support Groups
Math and Reading Specialists will be informally meeting with students this fall. These initial meetings allow specialists to check in with former students and get to know any new students as they plan for their support groups.  If your child is selected to participate in an academic support group, you will receive additional information from the classroom teacher as well as the math or reading specialist by early October.
