  Apex Fun Run and Chill

It was a huge day for Birchview! The Apex fun run got everyone pumped up! Students worked hard and we had many, many students who filled their shirts with tallies.

The Birchview Chill was also a smashing success. Although the rain was insistent on making an appearance, a great time was had by all.

Thank you to the PTA for organizing two such wonderful events!

Mythology in 3rd Grade

Third grade has been learning about Greek mythology. They used Google docs to collaborate with each other. We hope you enjoy reading about what they learned.

Greek mythology is a time from long ago and has great stories about gods like Zeus and Poseidon. We want to tell you all about Greek by telling a story about a Greek god and his son:

Icarus

Icarus and his father Dealdalus were put in jail because Minatour and Minus did not want them to tell all their secrets.  Dealdalus made wings out of bird feathers and wax. It was very challenging but he did it. He made two pairs of wings and gave one to Icarus and said, "Be careful!"

"I know, I know", Icarus said. "You must not go too low to the sea or the waves wil make the feathers fall off." said Dealdalus. "I know", Icarus said. "But do not go too high or the sun will melt the wax and you will fall from a great height and land in the ocean." said Dealdalus. So they took off and Icarus said, "This is fun!". He flew higher and got too close to the sun and the feathers began to fall off. He plunged into the sea and drowned.

Some of you might read or have read the Percy Jackson or Heroes of Olympus series. These are great sources of knowledge and are funny and adventurous.

We used Google docs to share our questions and answers with our fellow friends.

Greetings from Mrs. Klotz's Art Room

Birchview artists continue to develop their art skills. It is wonderful to see students discover the artist inside themselves. Here is a glimpse of what students are creating:

1st grade: Students learned about Rock Art. They explored the question "Who are the people that made paintings and carvings so long ago?"  Students created their own version of rock art using paper and clay.

2nd grade: Students explored the world of French Impressionist Claude Monet. They made waterlily paintings with oil pastels and watercolor paint.

3rd grade: Students have learned about the Japanese Blowfish, otherwise known as "fugu."  They have begun work on their 3-D sculpture and will glaze soon.

4th grade: Students have learned the process of Subtractive Sculpture and have created interesting creatures and animals out of clay.  They have also explored artist Zeny Fuentes, a woodcarver from Oaxaca, Mexico.

5th grade:  Students are in the process of finishing up their 3-D sculpture of a clay rattle. They have learned the skills of scoring, hollowing, attaching, and carving. The clay rattles are looking beautiful, and students will glaze them this week.
