What's New This Week
This Thursday Folder contains the June lunch menu.  Please read below for upcoming Birchview events, and what's happening in Community Education.
Spring MAP Testing

All Wayzata students in grades 2-7 will complete the Measures of Academic Progress™ (MAP) test this spring. MAP tests are aligned with the Minnesota state standards, determine your child's instructional level, and measure academic growth in the areas of Reading and Mathematics. Spring 2014 MAP test results will be loaded into Skyward Family Access by June 11. For more information about MAP tests and how to access your child's scores in Skyward Family Access, go to www.wayzata.k12.mn.us/Page/14029.

Family In Need

A family new to the Birchview Community suffered a house fire yesterday, May 28. Three of their children are students in our school. Currently, the Red Cross is caring for their needs and a connection is being made with IOCP. However, as a school community, we would also like to respond to the needs of the family. The PTA will be organizing donations towards a Target gift card. If your family would like to support the family in this way, please feel free to send donations in an envelope labeled "PTA: Family Fire Fund" by Tuesday, June 3.

Words of Wisdom

This week's Words of Wisdom are on Character.

How can you tell if a person has good character? If you're not sure, listen to this: People with good character are caring, responsible people who respect others and do their best to contribute to the world around them.

The best way to tell the kind of person someone is, is to notice:

a) how he treats people who can't do him any good, and

b) how he treats people when they can't fight back.*

Have you ever been nice to someone simply because you wanted something from him? Have you ever taken advantage of someone smaller or weaker just because you knew you could get away with it? If the answer is yes, then you might want to think about what this quote is saying: A person of character doesn't take advantage of others.

Today, treat others with respect and you'll be treating yourself to a better you.

With something to think about, this is Birchview Elementary . Make it a great day . . . or not. The choice is yours.

Summer Food Drive

Summer's approaching and kids won't be in school. This means many students won't be getting their breakfast or lunch needs met, but they will still need breakfast and lunch.

Please help Birchview support our local food shelves by donating to our "Summer's Approaching" food drive.

We've assigned each grade level one child-friendly food to donate (see below). If students bring at least one of their assigned items we'll really be able to Make A Difference.

Thank you, in advance, for your help and support,

The Birchview Staff

Nature Center
Planting day was a huge success! Students enjoyed the day and our nature center has many new trees. We also planted birch around the school grounds. We are Birchview, after all! This project was funded through multiple sources.
  • A $2,000 dollar grant from The Tree Trust was funded through Excel Energy. This paid for 45 trees.
  • A private donor paid for another 11 trees.
  • We received $2,000 through a Lowe's "Toolbox for Education" grant. This will fund maintenance and educational materials for the nature center.
  • Steve Narr built an arched railing for the bridge.
  • Cub Scouts started rebuilding our walkways
  • A community association is also asking how they can support our outdoor learning area so more good is yet to come.
We are still recruiting volunteers to help with watering over the summer. Please contact the office if you're interested in helping!
