Spring 2013
What's New in Newcastle
It's officially spring, which brings thoughts of fun warm weather activities. Learn how to give back to the planet at the annual Earth Day event in Lake Boren Park Saturday, April 20th, starting at 10 a.m. Do spring cleaning and get rid of your unwanted stuff at recycling and document shredding events that day. Read on for more detail about these events and other upcoming activities.
Meeting on New Middle School
A community meeting to present information about the Renton School District's new middle school is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Renton Academy, 6928 116th Ave. SE in Newcastle. The district's design team will provide an opportunity for public input that will be used to guide the process through design and construction phases. The meeting will focus on reviewing the project schedule and existing site conditions and presenting the vision statement, guiding principles and education specifications established by a steering committee.
Coal Creek Parkway Lane Closures
Motorists should plan for delays on Coal Creek Parkway starting in late April. The roadway will be reduced to one lane in each direction in an area just south of Forest Drive and just north of SE 60th Street. Closures are necessary for construction of a City of Bellevue project to replace a deteriorating culvert with a new bridge. The work will improve public safety, provide a new pedestrian walkway and improve fish passage. For more information and to receive e-mail alerts with new information, go to www.bellevuewa.gov/coalcreekbridge.htm
New Community Activities Commission Looking for Volunteers
Newcastle residents who have an interest in community events, city parks, trails and recreational programs are invited to apply for a position on the newly formed Community Activities Commission. The commission is made up of seven members who assist officials, staff and community groups in facilitating events and programs in the city. Regular meetings are held once a month on Wednesday evenings. Some additional meeting times may be needed to prepare for specific events or special projects. New members are appointed by the Council to a four-year term following a selection process. If you are interested, submit a letter of interest, resume and application to the City Clerk's office via email or hard copy. Applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, April 19th. Download an application at www.ci.newcastle.wa.us.
Get Ready for an Emergency
Local events will be held in April to assist you in preparing for an emergency. Redmond Ready Day Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Redmond Police Department features a two-hour class in personal preparedness and First Aid and CPR certification. Registration and a $25 fee must be received by Thursday, April 25, and is non-refundable. Visit the Redmond Ready website for more information. There also will be live entertainment and games.
Newcastle Earth Day Celebration

Shred-A-Thon and Recycling Events
In conjunction with Earth Day activities April 20th, HomeStreet Bank's Newcastle branch is hosting a Shred-A-Thon and a recycling truck from "Mr. Scrappy." From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., community members are invited to bring documents to HomeStreet at 6949 Coal Creek Parkway SE for safe disposal, as well as recyclable items such as old metal, computers and appliances. There is no limit, and most items are free to dispose of. A $10 fee will be charged for monitors, and a $20 fee for televisions. On the same date at Renton Academy, a Newcastle Recycling Collection Event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Recycle additional items such as tires, motor oil, antifreeze, lead acid batteries and other battery types, household goods and clothing, appliances and even mattresses. A nominal fee applies to some items. View the event flyer for full details.
Community Wildlife Certification Effort
A project to obtain National Wildlife Federation Community Wildlife Habitat Certifcation for the entire Newcastle community kicks off at this year's Earth Day at Lake Boren Park. At the event April 20th, stop by the National Wildlife Federation booth to register your yard as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat, which will help achieve the community-wide certification. A habitat garden can be created anywhere, even on an apartment balcony. By meeting the organization's certification criteria, you will provide food, water, cover and a place for wildlife to raise their offspring. For more information on making a garden for wildlife, go to the National Wildlife Federation's website.
Renew Your Pet License Penalty-Free
If you haven't already renewed an expired pet license, now is the perfect time. An amnesty period will be in effect from April 1st through April 30th, allowing pet owners to renew licenses without facing a fine. Starting May 1st, residents who have unlicensed cats or dogs could face a fine of up to $125 for a spayed or neutered pet, and $250 for an unaltered pet. The cost for a pet license remains unchanged at $30, along with the $60 rate for unaltered pets. You can purchase a pet license at Newcastle City Hall, at over 100 locations in King County in person, or online. For a list of sales locations or to purchase online go to www.kingcounty.gov/pets.
