New Funding for Hiring & Training

Local SMEs can gain access to several new grants that released this fall. One program is specific to training employees, the other if for hiring a recent post-secondary graduate into a digital skills related role.

Canada Job Grant: $10K/66% Training Grant per Trainee
- $192M has been allocated to this training grant each year until 2020 to support 66% of training expenses up to $10K per trainee to help develop their skills and support career advancement.

Digital Skills Hiring Grant: $16/hour for 16 weeks
This grant provides $16/hour wage subsidy for 16-weeks to support a role that utilizes digital skills. If you are unsure of the fit of a particular role, Mentor Works can assess your job description.

Home Grown Innovation
MSB Industries partners with Durham Resident

Durham is full of innovation and mentorship.  We're also serious about our waste management.  Proof positive is the recent partnership of Durham resident Janet Sirko, with MSB Industries, Pickering, On.

Tired of slipping, messy compost bags, Ms.Sirko invented the 'Ring Around the Bin', a plastic ring that fits securely over your compost bag in the common Orbis kitchen compost bin.   With Canada and US patents in hand, she found Brian & Marino Valerio at MSB to figure out the engineering and production side.  The product is now available at the Pickering Markets and Maximum Nutrition Centres in Pickering and Whitby.

This isn't the first time MSB has taken a product from concept to shelf for their customer.  It's something second generation owner Brian Valerio has a passion for; a passion that has helped the business grow as they continue to identify niche opportunities to create products that might otherwise stay an idea "on a napkin".

Of course, the right compost bag that doesn't leak or tear completes this story.  Pickering's own Bag to Nature compost bag is on the shelves at Costco and was designed by Pickering based Indaco Manufacturing

         City Centre Banners

The City of Pickering vision for a vibrant downtown continues.  Next time you're in our City Centre, look for our new street banners.

Phase 1 of an ongoing City Centre branding program the banners are designed to represent the four pillars driving our ongoing vision for a new City Centre, being

Inspire, Gather, Live and Work.

At the top, the banners feature a new City Centre branding element designed to include aspects of our current Corporate logo, City Hall architecture, nature, and a relaxed font style capturing the creative aspect of city development.

Watch for more banners and signage in 2015 as we continue to demarcate the geographic boundary of our emerging downtown and bring alive the vision of City Centre, Pickering.
