Cooking for Freedom House |
On Thursday January 30, 2014, seven Service League members volunteered their time to prepare and serve dinner to the residents of Freedom House, located at 2997 St. Anthony Drive in Green Bay. Freedom House is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving all types of homeless families with children in Brown County including single Moms, single Dads and couples. In addition to providing food, clothing and shelter, Freedom House also provides education and counseling to its residents. This is an element that truly sets them apart because they help their residents change their lives by teaching them valuable life skills to help them succeed on their own.
Prior to Thursday night's dinner, other Service League members shopped for groceries, baked homemade deserts and delivered all the ingredients needed to Freedom House in advance. We had two dinner services and fed about 60 people, most of which were children. Our meal included a taco bar, spanish rice, refried beans, fruit and desert. We were all so humbled by our experience there, and truly enjoyed helping these families out. After dinner was cleaned up, we received a short tour of the building, which opened our eyes to the ongoing needs at Freedom House. From cleaning products to food items to clothes and toiletry items, they will take any donations that come their way. If you would like to learn more about their organization, or would like to find out how you can help, please visit their website at www.freedomhouseministries.org.

President's Message: Joey Liebmann
"Service to a just cause rewards the worker with more real happiness and satisfaction than any other venture of life."
~Carrie Chapman Catt~
On two separate occasions this past week I was asked by community members how much the Back to School Store costs each year. For those of us who have put our own children in new sneakers and clothing and purchased a new backpack full of supplies, we know how expensive this can be. It costs an average of $150 per child for a family to buy the supplies we provide. For the 1,500 students that utilized the store last year, they were able to quickly do the math: $225,000. Plus we provide another 1,500 students with backpacks full of school supplies. Fortunately, our team of amazing shoppers are able to bargain shop that total cost down to around $100,000!!
While the number is still very big, these two individuals were more impressed that 40 women can pull this off! It isn't one day in August for us, it's much more than that. It's committing to shopping the sale racks year-round, managing complex spreadsheets of our current inventory, sorting and tying shoes together into the wee hours and planning a fundraiser, our annual Big Blue Bash to raise a large portion of the funds needed for both the Back to School Store and our other projects (Basics for Babies, Basic Necessities and Teens for Independent Living).
With the Big Blue Bash less than a month away, Service League active members are working tirelessly to create an event that will be remembered and also ensure that we raise as much money as possible so that the Back to School Store can continue for many years to come!
We are so incredibly thankful for the many community-minded sponsors that believe in Service League and our mission. We have a fantastic live and silent auction teed up for competitive bidding, games to entertain and a fun atmosphere to spend a night out with friends for a great cause! We are eager to see each of you in your 'flapper to dapper' attire at our Big Blue Bash: a Gatsby-inspired soiree on March 8th at the Radisson. |

On March 8, 2014, Service League of Green Bay will hold its annual fundraiser, The Big Blue Bash, Color for a Cause benefit. This event will again feature a seated dinner in the Radisson's ballroom, a live band, and live and silent auctions. Last year we had a sellout event, selling all 400 seats and raising a record number in donations. This year, we are proud to offer some unique items in our live and silent auction. A mozzarella making party at Nala's Fromagerie, a Mason Crosby signed jersey, a Canadian Fishing trip, a Margarita Party for 20, and an African Safari are just a few of the new items we have this year to offer our guests. We will also have a number of games including wine toss and a chance to win prizes playing Pinko. Guests can also purchase a Golden Ticket for $100 for a 1 in 100 chance to "cherry-pick" an item from our Live Auction. Dollars raised at the event will be used to fund Service League's projects in Brown County. Primarily, they will help fund the Back to School Store event, which takes place every August. This event provides 1,500 grade school children with all of the items they need to start the school year off on the right foot. Each student receives a new backpack, new school supplies, a new outfit and shoes, a dental screening and, most importantly, renewed self confidence. The Back to School Store also provides 1,500 middle school children with backpacks and school supplies. We are looking forward to spending another wonderful evening with our Service League friends and family at Big Blue Bash! When: Saturday, March 8th from 5:30 PM to 11:00 PM Where: Radisson Hotel Tickets: $50 each, $1,000 for a corporate table of 10
