Back to School Store Committee Member

I am originally from Reno, Nevada but when I was 13 years old, I moved to Green Bay with my parents and younger brother. My mom got a job here, which is the reason we relocated. I lived in Suamico with my family up until a month ago when my husband and I bought a house in Pulaski. I married my high school sweetheart, Eric Lasecki, on June 22nd. We had been together for 8 1/2 years! We have a 3-year-old German Shepherd named Bentley and he is my baby!

Outside of Service League I love to read, cook and bake, go camping, and spend time with family and friends. Eric and I are enjoying making our new home feel like our very own. I am currently on the Back to School Store committee, and have held that role the past two years. This coming year I am going to be the hospitality co-chair and am looking forward to that!

Currently, I am the Events Coordinator at the De Pere Area Chamber of Commerce and have held that position for the past 3 1/2 years.

President's Message: Joey Liebmann

"Service to a just cause rewards the worker with more real happiness and satisfaction than any other venture of life."

 ~Carrie Chapman Catt~

It is that time of year again - many of us are scurrying around trying to get our kids ready for school and enjoying the last few moments of summer.  Our children are eagerly waiting to take their new sneakers out of the box, planning their first day of school outfit and aligning their crayons, markers and pencils in their shiny, new pencil box. Unfortunately, there is an alarming number of families in our community that are instead trying to decide how to buy food for their family and get their children a much needed pair of shoes for the upcoming school year. However, thanks to a huge community effort, Service League of Green Bay's Back to School Store just completed its 21st Annual Store, which provided some much needed relief to these families.

The Back to School Store is designed to get kids to school on the first day and aid children in staying in school all year long. We provide each child that comes through the doors a NEW outfit including shoes, socks, jeans, a shirt and underwear. We provide vision and dental screenings, school supplies, a backpack, storybooks and most importantly, we provide each child the opportunity to confidently embrace the joy of a new school year.

We take for granted how things like new school supplies and a new outfit can aid in a child's school success. Having had the opportunity to personally shop with four students this week, I was able to see firsthand, through the smiles on their faces, how they were feeling about themselves, as they stepped into a new pair of sneakers or picked out a backpack in their favorite color.

Many of you reading this article have volunteered, financially supported, or even chaired the Back to School store - and know from experience what an emotionally-charged day it can be.  On August 7th, East High School was filled with the sounds of happy kids excited and eager for school to begin. I don't know that any of us involved will ever tire of hearing these sounds.  More than 1,500 kids were invited to the store, and an additional 1,500 middle-schoolers received backpacks.  Hundreds of volunteers were there to guide children thru, and an incredible amount of donations were made!  This year's Store was undoubtedly an absolute success on all fronts! I would like to hear a round of applause for the 2013 Back to School Store team, as well as all of you who have shared in the commitment over the years.  Thank you for making our community a better place to live!

Very Truly Yours,

Joey Liebmann

Back to School Store Had Another Great Year
August 7, 2013 at East High School

Service League is proud to announce that our 21st annual Back to School Store was a huge success! We invited 1,500 grade school children to the Store, which took place on Wednesday, August 7th. We also distributed 1,500 backpacks for middle school students on Monday, August 5th to our partner agencies.

We had many exciting improvements to the store this year. For example, we expanded our "celebrity shopper" program to include high school athletes in team uniforms. The kids loved it! We were also honored to have Congressman Reid Ribble and Mayor Jim Schmidt as celebrity shoppers this year, as well as Murphy in the Morning, Bill Jartz and even Miss Wisconsin! Our agency information tables were also expanded this year. We had a total of 14 tables with activities and information for all of the families. We also increased our marketing efforts and are excited to say that we were all over the news and radio! Thank you very much to WIXX, Y100, the Green Bay Press Gazette, Fox11, WBAY-2, WFRV-5 and NBC26 for helping us bring support and awareness to this great event.

Reva Shaw and Crystal Uebelher send their deepest gratitude to each and every past and present Service League member, as well as ALL of the wonderful volunteers, donors and supporters for your continued support of this program. We could not do it without you!
