Walk of Hope
EmPoWER Somerset and the EmPoWER Family Success Center are looking forward to participating in Carrier Clinic's Annual Walk of Hope, this Saturday, September 21st, 2013.  Visit our table at the event to decorate a t-shirt and discuss how our center can benefit you and your family's success.

Family Success Center

Our mission is to provide an environment to strengthen and empower individuals and families and to build connections among families and the community.
The Empower Family Success Center is holding some exciting fundraising opportunities this fall. We need your help to reach many of our goals. "So, what are your goals?" you may be asking yourself. Here's an extensive list of what we would like to accomplish before the new year: a holiday dinner to honor local veterans, essential baby items for local families in need, thank you events for our amazing volunteers, and the ability to host free family activities on a monthly basis.
Join us at our fundraiser by simply Dining to Donate! On Tuesday, October 22nd from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Bridgewater Applebee's. When you bring in the flyer, 10% of your meal's cost will go to The Empower Family Success Center. See, it's easy and tasty to give back to the Empower FSC!

Keys to Innervisions

In 2013, EmPoWER Somerset has delivered a total of six Keys to Innervisions (KIV) groups with 70 youth participating in the program. KIV is an evidence-based 8-session program that covers concepts such as positive decision making, goal-setting, healthy choices, self-esteem and examining how belief systems, attitudes and values influence behavior.  Ashley, who recently completed KIV, said that through the program she learned how to "relieve stress in a variety of positive ways."  Ashley also commented that "Our facilitator gave us excellent dinner ideas to reach our healthy goals!"  Ashley's KIV group was facilitated by EmPoWER Somerset Prevention Specialist Julie Mercier, also a full-time high school teacher.

Coordinated School Health

Coordinated School Health students stayed active over the summer swimming and having fun at pools in our community. EmPoWER Somerset partnered with the Somerset Valley YMCA to provide swim passes for 60 youth in Somerset County.  Youth were given the opportunity to swim all summer at one of the three YMCA branches in Somerville, Hillsborough, and Bridgewater.  In addition, 50 Bound Brook students received summer swim passes for the township recreation pool at Codrington Park.

Take Control of Your Health

Thanks to our wonderful TCYH participants and partners!

Since January, EmPoWER Somerset has delivered 5 cycles of the Take Control of Your Health (TCYH) program to 45 veterans at Community Hope and 32 seniors at the Avalon Assisted Living Centers at Bridgewater and Hillsborough. EmPoWER received funding for this program, along with our partners - the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disabilities and Jewish Family Services, through the NJ Department of Human Services.

Program participants made choices to engage in healthier, more active lifestyles and made progress toward their personal health goals by making weekly action plans and using their healthy living "toolboxes" in a comfortable, supported environment alongside their peers.

When asked how participating in TCYH has contributed to a positive lifestyle change, participants responded:

  • "Eating healthier. Exercising."
  • "Made me aware of other avenues toward better health."
  • "Eating healthy food doesn't taste bad at all after all."
  • "I now pay attention to what it is I'm eating. I've begun working out more than ever before and see myself eating and living a healthier life."
  • "I'm trying to exercise and take care of myself. Eat better and exercise more."
  • "Learned to read the contents of food, i.e. saturated fats, Trans fats, etc. Eating healthy has helped with my breathing, blood pressure and how I sleep."
  • "I think about making proper decisions about eating healthy food."

And congratulations to Javon, one of our veterans from Community Hope, who was spotted applying the principles learned in TCYH to her everyday life by taking a happy, healthy bike ride around the Lyons VA campus!
