Meaningful Use |
There is a lot of news about healthcare these days, and you may have seen the term "Meaningful Use," but unless you're in the medical field, you may not have heard much about it.
Meaningful Use (MU) describes a set of requirements put forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to attempt to make it easier for all healthcare providers to share information electronically. It has three stages so far, but there may be more added in the future.
What can patients do?
There are several things that you can do to help us meet Meaningful Use requirements.
-
Bring an up-to-date list of ALL your medications to every visit. This includes over-the-counter medicine, like Tylenol or Advil, as well as vitamins or supplements. Medicines used for eye conditions can interact with some other medicines, so it's important that your doctor knows everything that you're currently using.
-
Tell your doctor about any health problems you have. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other conditions can affect your eyes, so it's important that you share this information with him.
-
Share your email address with us. Beginning in 2015, our doctors will be able to provide patients with electronic access to their health information. When you provide your email address, we can send you a secure message that will take you to a similarly secure patient portal, allowing you to access information about your previous visit. You'll also receive our quarterly newsletter by email. In the future, we will also be able to send email reminders about upcoming appointments.
