A Message from Dr. Ervin
Dr. John Ervin

Greetings!

Thank you for your continued interest in the Eye Center of Central Georgia. We hope you find our newsletter interesting and informative.

October is World Blindness Awareness Month. In this country, we are fortunate to have readily available medical care that minimizes blindness from preventable causes. Here, conditions such as eye infections, cataracts, strabismus and glaucoma are treated promptly with medications and surgery and rarely lead to blindness whereas in other parts of the world, many people lose sight due to the lack of physicians and surgeons. Many others have severe visual limitations simply because they do not have access to glasses. Statistics from the World Health Organization suggests that nearly 180 million people worldwide suffer from visual impairment.

Should you be interested in additional information about common eye conditions, we would encourage you to visit www.eyecareamerica.org, the public service program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

All of us at the Eye Center appreciate your patronage and look forward to your next visit.

Decorative Contact Lenses

Halloween is just around the corner!  Many people plan to use decorative contact lenses to add extra flair to their costumes.  While these lenses may look good, they might not be so good for your eyes.

Contact lenses are considered medical devices, and are regulated by the FDA.  There is no such thing as a "one size fits all" contact lens.  If you decide to use decorative contacts, you should first have an eye exam from an eye doctor, even if you think your vision is perfect.  Your eye doctor will give you a prescription that includes the correction you need to improve your vision, and a measurement of the shape of the front of your eye.  This measurement, called a k-reading, helps the optician find the type of contacts that will fit your eyes properly.

An improperly fitted set of contact lenses can cause many problems with your eyes.  They can scratch your corneas, which is not only painful, but can leave permanent scars.  These scars can leave you with decreased vision, making it difficult or impossible to read or drive.  Poorly fitted contact lenses can also cause blood vessels to grow into your cornea, or cause your eyelids to droop.

Getting your contact lenses from a licensed professional means that your your lenses will fit your eyes properly, but there are even more benefits.  When you have your first contact lens fitting, you will be shown the right way to put your contacts in and take them out.  This dramatically decreases the chances of scratching your cornea.

You'll also learn how to take care of your contact lenses, including how to clean and disinfect them.  This will greatly reduce your chances of getting an eye infection that could permanently damage your eyes.

The Eye Center is proud to sponsor "The Red Velvet Cake War" at Macon Little Theatre.
Red Velvet Cake War Poster
In this riotously funny Southern-fried comedy, the three Verdeen cousins - Gaynelle, Peaches and Jimmie Wyvette - could not have picked a worse time to throw their family reunion.  Things spin hilariously out of control when a neighbor's pet devours everything edible, a one-eyed suitor shows up to declare his love and a jaw-dropping high-stakes wager is made on who bakes the best red velvet cake. As this fast-paced romp barrels toward its uproarious climax, you'll wish your own family reunions were this much fun!

The production runs until October 21 at Macon Little Theatre, located at 4220 Forsyth Street in Macon, GA.
