Forum, Eucharist, refreshments, retreat
At 9:00, we'll meet for our fifth session on the prophets (in the multipurpose room downstairs). We celebrate the Eucharist at 10:00.
After the Eucharist, we gather for refreshments. The vestry and priest will excuse themselves right after the service and spend the rest of the day in retreat.

Forums on Sunday mornings
| | Come at 9:00 this Sunday All are welcome to learn more about the prophets of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament, First Testament). We are watching a DVD feauturing Walter Brueggemann, a premier scholar and teacher on the prophets, called Embracing the Prophets in Contemporary Culture: Confronting Today's Pharoahs.
Participants are finding the presentation stimulating and engaging and full of insights for reflecting on our commitments as Christians. Each session includes a video presentation lasting 10-15 minutes followed by group conversation. We begin at 9:00 in the multipurpose room downstairs.
The series will run through the rest of June; after that, we'll evaluate this approach and the time slot, and we'll see what we'd like to learn about next and how best to go about it. |
Art Squawk | | It was a fun event! Grace was one of several downtown venues that welcomed visitors last Sunday. People filed in throughout the afternoon to see icons from the hands of Peter Pearson and Thomas Major, and 36 people attended Pearson's talk at 2:30, which gave a brief introduction to icons. Each venue collected canned goods to be donated to our food pantry. Hosting this event took many volunteers: Tony V and Mike A took the lead on procuring refreshments, the Brosses hung festive banners outside, Mae P and Kathy Y and Joe C and Joan R welcomed visitors with a cool drink and snacks, Hillie C arranged several bouquets of flowers, and others helped with set-up and clean-up and publicity. It was a great beginning to our participation in this quarterly event. The next Art Squawk is at the end of September. To learn more, check the Allentown Art Squawk Facebook page.

More Art in Allentown | | Visit Art in the Park next Saturday
A juried exhibition will be set up next Saturday, June 15, in West Park, sponsored by the West Park Civic Association. There will be more than 80 artisans, as well as music, food, and dance. The park is bounded by Linden and Turner Streets and 15th and 16th Streets.
Parishioners at Church of the Mediator (next to the park) will be selling food, having a rummage sale, and doing other activities--one more sign of a church with a vital presence in the city!

Diocesan Ordinations | | We will have some new priests
This diocese expects to have new priests soon, including Andrew Reinholz and his wife, Kim. The ordination liturgy is scheduled for 4:00 pm, Sunday, June 30, at Church of the Mediator (1620 West Turner Street). Parishioners and people from across the diocese are welcome to attend and share in the celebration! |
Parish Picnic | | Write it down: Sunday, August 18
The Denton-Borhaugs have offered their house and yard (and pool and croquet court!) for a parish picnic again this summer, on August 18. There was a great turnout last year--we enjoyed the pool, the food, the socializing, the kids and adults together, etc. This is a social event with no other agenda than enjoying each other's company and the summer. Later in the summer there will be sign up sheets to bring food and drinks, but save the date now, if you can! |
Midday Quiet Prayer | | We'll start later in the summer
The vestry and others parishioners had hoped to begin hosting a daily midday quiet service next week. The plan is to have the church open every day at lunch time and welcome downtown neighbors and workers to a place and time of quiet prayer. Some parishioners are working on avenues for publicity, and plans will be tested and refined so this practice can begin as soon as is reasonably possible. Stay tuned! |
