Sunday, June 2, at Grace
Forum, Eucharist, Art Squawk

At 9:00, we'll meet for our fourth session on the prophets (in the multipurpose room downstairs). All are welcome--no previous experience or education is necessary!

We celebrate the Eucharist at 10:00. We enter the long stretch of the church year called "after Pentecost." For all the Sundays from now through November, we read through the gospel of Luke. For the second readings, we read through several New Testament letters, beginning this week with Galatians. The first readings will come from prophets (or be about prophets, as this week we hear about Elijah).

One note about our scripture readings in this long "green season:" they are three separate readings each Sunday. They were not chosen to correlate with each other or reinforce each other in any way. When hearing them each week, it's good to keep that in mind and not listen for connections that aren't there!

After the service, we will shift gears and prepare to open our space to "Art Squawkers." Our contribution to the event is an exhibit of icons by Peter Pearson that will be set up in the church. Pearson will give a talk about icons at 2:30.
Forums on Sunday mornings
brueggemann
Come at 9:00 this Sunday

All are welcome to learn more about the prophets of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament, First Testament). We are watching a DVD feauturing Walter Brueggemann, a premier scholar and teacher on the prophets, called Embracing the Prophets in Contemporary Culture: Confronting Today's Pharoahs.

Participants are finding the presentation stimulating and engaging and full of insights for reflecting on our commitments as Christians.
Each session includes a video presentation lasting 10-15 minutes followed by group conversation. We begin at 9:00 in the multipurpose room downstairs.

The series will run through the rest of May and June; after that, we'll evaluate this approach and the time slot, and we'll see what we'd like to learn about next and how best to go about it.

Art in Downtown, including Grace
art squawk logo
It's this Sunday

A new effort is taking shape in downtown Allentown: a quarterly arts event called Art Squawk. Several galleries and other venues welcome residents and visitors to enjoy art in the downtown. At the last event (March 24), twelve groups participated, including the Allentown Art Museum, Palette and Pen, and the Antonio Salemme Foundation.

Grace will join this group and welcome people to our worship space on Sunday, June 2, from 12:00 to 5:00. We'll host an art exhibit--Icons: A Brush with God. Iconographer Peter Pearson will display his work and give a talk at 2:30 about making icons. Read more about the artist and see some of his work here.
We will offer hospitality and refreshments.

Each Art Squawk has welcomed donations for a particular charitable cause. The recipient on June 2 is Grace's food pantry: participants at all the venues are encouraged to bring a can of food, and all donations will be given to the neighbors who visit our pantry.

To learn more, check the Allentown Art Squawk Facebook page. When you get there, check out the posting about Grace's participation, and feel free to add a welcoming comment!
Midday Quiet Prayer
candlelight
We'll start later in the summer

The vestry and others parishioners had hoped to begin hosting a daily midday quiet service next week. The plan is to have the church open every day at lunch time and welcome downtown neighbors and workers to a place and time of quiet prayer. Some parishioners are working on avenues for publicity, and plans will be tested and refined so this practice can begin as soon as is reasonably possible. Stay tuned!
Diocesan Ordinations
We will have some new priests

This diocese expects to have new priests soon, including Andrew Reinholz and his wife, Kim. The ordination liturgy is scheduled for 4:00 pm, Sunday, June 30, at Church of the Mediator (1620 West Turner Street).

Parishioners and people from across the diocese are welcome to attend and share in the celebration!
CPR for Lay People
cpr
Thanks to Bill A, several people learned Chest Compression CPR ("CPR for Lay People") last week at coffee hour. Bill brought a mannequin and music to help people practice the correct speed and rhythm. This helps us be a bit more prepared to care for each other when an emergency arises.
