Trinity Sunday, May 26, at Grace
| |
Forum, Eucharist, socializing, learning
At 9:00, we'll meet for our third session on the prophets (in the multipurpose room downstairs). All are welcome--no previous experience or education is necessary! We celebrate the Eucharist at 10:00. Deacon Andrew Reinholz will preach. The texts and music celebrate the mystery of the Trinity, and be sure to check the bulletin for a beautiful contemporary sonnet about the Trinity.
After the service, we gather for refreshments and conversation. Parishioner Bill A has graciously offered to share a skill with us at this time as well: he will teach Chest Compression CPR (CPR for lay people). This method involves chest compressions only--no mouth-to-mouth resuscitation or pulse checks. Bill is an Emergency Medical Technician, and he will bring mannequins for us to practice on.

Forums on Sunday mornings
| | Come at 9:00 this Sunday All are welcome to learn more about the prophets of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament, First Testament). We are watching a DVD feauturing Walter Brueggemann, a premier scholar and teacher on the prophets, called Embracing the Prophets in Contemporary Culture: Confronting Today's Pharoahs.
Participants are finding the presentation stimulating and engaging and full of insights for reflecting on our commitments as Christians. Each session includes a video presentation lasting 10-15 minutes followed by group conversation. We begin at 9:00 in the multipurpose room downstairs.
The series will run through the rest of May and June; after that, we'll evaluate this approach and the time slot, and we'll see what we'd like to learn about next and how best to go about it. |
Grace Montessori School
| | We dedicated a new outside space
The main campus of our school (814 West Linden) has a renovated outdoor space. What was a grassy area that often became muddy and unusable is now a landscaped area with a walking path. The labyrinth will be used by the children and teachers for outdoor activities and learning.
The school had its Earth Day celebration today in conjunction with the dedication of the labyrinth. Children sang and parents were proud of them!
Executive Director Libby House welcomed the local business people who donated money and other expertises for the project, and local officials were on hand for the celebration (including the mayor, whose children attended our school). Joe C and Tony V attended the event on behalf of Grace's vestry, which serves as the school's board. The Rev. Beth Reed offered a prayer at the beginning of the event, and the Rev. Don Knapp also attended. Fr. Knapp was instrumental in the founding of the school 20 years ago, and he was grateful to see its progress.
The next time you are in downtown (Sunday?), take a walk over to 8th and LInden and check out the new space!

Art in Downtown, including Grace | | One week to go . . . A new effort is taking shape in downtown Allentown: a quarterly arts event called Art Squawk. Several galleries and other venues welcome residents and visitors to enjoy art in the downtown. At the last event (March 24), twelve groups participated, including the Allentown Art Museum, Palette and Pen, and the Antonio Salemme Foundation.
Grace will join this group and welcome people to our worship space on Sunday, June 2, from 12:00 to 5:00. We'll host an art exhibit--Icons: A Brush with God. Iconographer Peter Pearson will display his work and give a talk at 2:30 about making icons. Read more about the artist and see some of his work here. Weather permitting, we can have tables and chairs outside for resting and socializing. We will offer hospitality and refreshments. Each Art Squawk has welcomed donations for a particular charitable cause. The recipient on June 2 is Grace's food pantry: participants at all the venues are encouraged to bring a can of food, and all donations will be given to the neighbors who visit our pantry. The event is an opportunity for many hands to participate: to prepare our space (inside and out), greet visitors, set up, and clean up. There is a sign-up sheet in the hallway on the way to the gathering space. To learn more, check the Allentown Art Squawk Facebook page. When you get there, check out the posting about Grace's participation, and feel free to add a welcoming comment! |
