Eucharist and Annual Meeting

We celebrate the Eucharist at 10:00.

It is the first Sunday in Lent, and on this day each year we hear how Jesus was tempted in the desert. He was tempted to use his power for what the devil proposed, and he refused. He did not let the devil determine how he would use his power. What do you make of this?

After the Eucharist, we will hold the Annual Meeting of the parish. At this business meeting, we will review the state of the parish and its finances, and we will have the opportunity to converse about our present and future. Please make every effort to be present! Lunch (Subway sandwiches) will follow, and there will be a basket for donations for the cost of the food ($5 per person).

Evening Prayer in Lent
"I invite you to the observance of a holy Lent"

Lent is a season of penitence, and keeping Lent prepares us to enter deeply into the paschal mystery (Jesus' life, death, and resurrection and our participation in those) that we celebrate most intensely in the Paschal Triduum.

On the middle five Wednesdays of Lent, people of Grace will gather for a simple service of evening prayer at 6:00. We will continue in the mode we began in Advent, being attentive to God's presence through chanting, scripture reading, intercessory prayer, and silence.

"Paschal Triduum" is the term for the one Easter celebration that spans three nights (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday). The Great Vigil of Easter, held this year at 8:00 pm on March 30, is the principal liturgical celebration of the entire year.

Please put all three nights of the Triduum on your calendar (March 28-30) and plan to be present as we are immersed in the stories and actions that shape us as followers of Jesus.
Pancake Supper
pancake supper 2013
We ate and ate and ate

On Shrove Tuesday, we gathered to eat rich and fatty foods and enjoyed a last fling before the sobriety of Lent.

Grace hosted a Pancake Supper in Hadesty Hall, and about 30 people attended, including parishioners, volunteers from our food pantry, members of Narcotics Anonymous, and several neighborhood residents. We feasted on pancakes, sausage, apple sauce, and fastnachts, and the many Mardi Gras decorations made for a festive atmosphere.

Our gratitude goes to David M, Will K, and their friend Dixie, who took the lead on organizing this event, and to the other volunteers who cooked, served, and cleaned up after the supper.
Development in the Downtown
Are you following the neighborhood news?

Demolition and construction continue to drive change and debate in our neighborhood. To stay up to date with what is planned and hoped for in the community, here are two resources:
  • cunapico.org (to learn about the Allentown Community Benefits Coalition and the findings from the recent community survey)
  • an interesting article in Friday's Morning Call about the merits and risks of proposed fees on developers within Allentown's Neighborhood Improvement Zone.

Credit union donates to our pantry

The Lehigh Valley Federal Credit Union strives to contribute to the community, and this winter they held a food drive for the benefit of our pantry. They asked their members for donations of canned fruit and vegetables, peanut butter, and canned meat, after checking with pantry director Patty McNamara about what would be most helpful. Last Friday, the manager/CEO, Allen Billiard, brought 300 pounds of food! This is a great gift, and the staff and volunteers and clients of the pantry are grateful for this community support.
