Welcome to the weekly e-newsletter of Grace Episcopal Church. Read about what's happening at Grace, and use the quick links to the left to find other helps to our life with God. To share this news with a friend, click the "forward email" link at the bottom of the page.
A letter with a pledge form was sent last week. If you filled out the form and brought it to church last week--thank you. If you need a form, call the office or pick one up from the back of church. Please bring or mail the completed form to Grace.
See you Sunday!

Sunday, November 4, at Grace--All Saints | | Eucharist, refreshments--and set your clocks back
We celebrate the Eucharist at 10:00--don't forget to turn the clocks back one hour on Saturday night.
It's the Feast of All Saints. The gospel gives us Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, and we are invited to consider all the ways, and in all the people, that Jesus brings life out of death.
After the Eucharist, we share refreshments in the gathering space.
Attribution: JESUS MAFA. Jesus raises Lazarus to life, from Art in the Christian Tradition, a project of the Vanderbilt Divinity Library, Nashville,TN. [retrieved October 30, 2012].

After the Storm | | We're getting back to normal
Many parishioners have been without power for days, though some of us experienced no power outage at all. At the church, the power did not go out; however, some slate tiles from the roof came loose and smashed on the sidewalk and the parking pad; they will need to be replaced. We were fortunate that we didn't lose food in the pantry freezers and refrigerators.
Grace Montessori School was closed for the entire week, and their annual Heritage Day celebration was postponed. |
Stewardship | | Many pledges are in
Thank you to all who brought pledges last week. If you didn't, please bring your form to church or mail it in. Pledges are the main source of revenue for the work of Grace Church. The church operates on a very lean budget; in fact, for the current year, we adopted a deficit budget. That situation is not, of course, ideal or sustainable for very long. Every pledge is important, and every pledge will contribute to the witness and work we are able to do in downtown Allentown.
Many thanks to Lisa Figueroa, Joan Roy, and Kathy Young, who organized the brunch last week, and thank you to all who brought food and beverages. It was a fine celebration. |
Allentown Historian to Speak at Church of the Mediator | | Come and learn on Sunday evening
Frank Whelan, a former parishioner at Grace and font of local knowledge, will speak at the Episcopal Church of the Mediator this Sunday evening at 6:00. His topic is "Faith of Our Fathers and Mothers: 250 Years of Saints."
His presentation is part of the celebration of Mediator's 150th anniversary and Allentown's 250th.
At Mediator, there will be Choral Evensong at 4:00 in celebration of All Saints, followed by a reception at 5:00, and the lecture at 6:00. The Church of the Mediator is at 1620 West Turner Street in Allentown. |
Downtown Development | | What is happening?
The next community-wide meeting of the Allentown Community Benefits Coalition will be Monday evening, Nov. 12. This group of organizations includes some downtown churches, artists' groups, the Lehigh County Conference of Churches, the NAACP, and others.
Downtown residents and representatives of various organizations will be present. We can add our voices as well.
Another way to communicate our opinions on the benefits that will result from the development is to fill out a Community Benefits Input Survey. These are available in the hallway on the way to the gathering space, and there is a folder to store the completed surveys. |
Fundraiser for the Pantry | | Wednesday at the Brew Works
This Wednesday evening (5:00 pm) at the Allentown Brew Works, the Grace Community Foundation will be the beneficiary of "Charity Cask Night." All the proceeds from the specially tapped firkin will go to the food pantry. In addition, the pantry will accept monetary donations and nonperishable food items.
Stopping in for a beer and a meal or snack would be an easy and fun way to support our pantry. What's a firkin? Click here. The Brew Works is a local family business (owned by the family of parishioner Mike Fegley).
