Sunday, October 21, at Grace | | Eucharist, refreshments, vestry
We celebrate the Eucharist at 10:00.
In the gospel, Jesus has challenging words for his disciples: "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them . . . But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant."
After refreshments, the vestry will gather to discuss two items we did not get to at our Thursday night meeting: Follow-up to the September 30 parish meeting and the work of the Allentown Community Benefits Coalition. The meeting is open to all.

Stewardship | | It's simpler this year
Look for an email later today about making an annual financial pledge for the work of the parish. There will be another letter next week. On October 28, we'll gather in the pledges and celebrate with a brunch afterward.
Pledges are the main source of revenue for the work of Grace Church. The church operates on a very lean budget; in fact, for the current year, we adopted a deficit budget. That situation is not, of course, ideal or sustainable for very long. Every pledge is important, and every pledge will contribute to the witness and work we are able to do in downtown Allentown.
The Episcopal Church encourages members to consider tithing (giving 10% of one's income) to the church. If 10% is not yet manageable, we are encouraged to work toward that goal, and to consider financial giving as a percentage of our income.
Please sign up this Sunday to bring a dish to share on October 28 (main dish, side dish, dessert) on the sheets at the back of church or in the hall by the gathering space. |
Church Cleaning | | Please come tomorrow, Saturday, October 20, at 10:00
Chuck Milositz cares for many things about our church building, including its cleanliness. He's organizing various cleaning tasks so that volunteers can show up on tomorrow and lend a hand.
Our church has no paid cleaning or maintenance staff. We have many cleaning supplies and tools, but if you have rags or other cleaning cloths to bring, please do so! |
Grace Community Foundation | | The food pantry received a grant for baby supplies
Our pantry distributes food to low-income neighbors, and often mothers ask for diapers and formula for their babies and toddlers. These items are not inexpensive, and people ask us for diapers especially because SNAP benefits (food stamps) cannot be used to buy diapers. In June, Libby House wrote a grant to the diocesan New Hope effort, and the pantry was awarded $7,000. Director Patty McNamara will use it to purchase baby supplies. The plan is that people who need such help will receive a box with diapers, formula, and other necessary items. This diocesan support will help mothers and little ones in our neighborhood, and we are grateful for that. For the most recent information on the New Hope Campaign, click here. |
