January 2014

So I called my Dad on Christmas. He proceeded to tell me about an article in Bottom Line magazine about healing with Qi. "Heeeallling," he said with a thick Indian accent. I didn't think I heard him correctly, so I kept asking, "what?" He repeated several times, "You know, 'healing with Qi.'"

Seriously? I had no response...all I could say after a very long pause filled with surprise and frustration was: "Yes, Dad, this is what we do." His response? "Oh well. I just didn't know." WHAT????!

For 10 years now I have been trying to help my Dad understand the benefits of Qi (life Force). He knows I have studied intensely and taken three trips to both China and Macau with the greatest Qi Gong master in the world, one of those trips my Dad paid for himself. Not to mention that I co-created a style of yoga based in Qi Gong!

I won't bore you with the history of me and my Dad, but I can tell you from Day 1, it hasn't been an easy road. Every difficulty in my life I can easily trace back to him or our relationship in some way. I guess I'm saying all this because it was the end of the year, and as I reflected on it, it seemed unnecessary to even contemplate a specific resolution of any kind.

I concluded that my life is one long resolution, one long letting go, and one long movement forward. It never stops, but what I see along the way are small improvements. This time I didn't continue to get frustrated after getting off the phone with him. I was able to joke about it with Paul, and make him laugh when I shared the story. We continued to joke about it throughout the day, something that would have been much harder for me in the past. I let it rest for a few days before I decided to write to my Dad.

Rather than focusing on the fact that his presence to these discussions was clearly absent or that I had repeatedly talked about these topics with him, I told him how excited I was with his interest, and how I hoped over the last 10 years that I would be able to share with someone I love, a practice that I love.

My point? Laughter. Laughter can strengthen the bond between two people, diffusing the thorny struggles of life. We are all looking for a common bond, a place we belong. Laughter brings us together.

My other point? As I mentioned earlier, I've decided not to make a resolution. It's become clearer than ever that my resolve is ongoing. Now and then, it is good to pause in our pursuit of anything and just BE it. What if we didn't follow an agenda for 2014 and allowed ourselves to BE it instead? Being patient, happy, loving, peaceful, healthy, insightful. Our attitude and "beingness," our presence of mind is always the first step, and fuels the choices for our lives.

The actions then follow with much more ease.  In 2014 I choose to refine myself by seeing beyond the trigger. I choose to restrain my unhealthy reactions and BE what I seek, elevating a situation to another level with love, honesty, and kindness...and I choose to LAUGH EVEN MORE.

I look forward to hearing about where you're placing your focus in 2014 and how you are allowing your heart to flourish and your life to expand in ways that are deeply meaningful to you. I look forward to finding new ways and new places to connect. I hope you'll keep in touch. Send me an email or give me a call.

In the meantime, I send you my love.

Namaste,
Anisha
