Principal Notes                                               September 1, 2016
Dear Families,

The carefree days of summer are over. The warm gentle breezes are still with us as we settle into a pattern of all the things that come with returning to school.  These first few days have just sped by.  Next week we welcome our K3 students to join our St. Mary's family.

There are only 44 days left before the Soles for Catholic Education Walk. Please mark your calendar for Saturday, October 15 to walk at Mount Mary University.  Registration is free through September 19 and you get a really cool t-shirt for registering.  T-shirts are delivered to school before the event.  Soles Walk Day is like a mini parish festival for the Archdiocese.  There's fun, laughter, games, music, food and more!  Remember that 100% of your pledge money raised stays as St. Mary's.  This year we will be raising money for our K4/K5 playroom and new items for our K3-K5 classrooms.  Last year we had a wonderful turn out.  Go to www.catholicschoolswalk.org to register under the St. Mary's Visitation Team.

Please mark your calendar 5th-8th grade parents.  We will have an orientation meeting for you on the evening of Wednesday, September 8th.  It will be different this year.  We will begin with a short meeting in the school atrium at 6:30.  You then will be going to the classrooms and following your child's schedule and meeting each of their teachers.

We welcome Ms. Maggie Beyer to St. Mary's as a student teacher.  She is from Winona State University in Minnesota.  She will be with Mrs. Perez and her 3rd graders until November. Then she will work with Mr. Falk and his math students.

We are sad to say goodbye to Mrs. Mary Schmidt, one of our K4 aides.  We are grateful for her service.  She is moving on to other opportunities. Her last day will be Friday, September 9th.   Mrs. Laura Maslowski, our K3  aide will be moving to K4.  We are excited to welcome Mrs. Deanna Pilgreen as our new K3 aide.

Be sure to check out our new spirit wear. Ordering is open until Thursday, September 8th.

On Sunday, September 4, Pope Francis will declare Mother Teresa of Calcutta a saint of the Catholic Church.  Please see this link for information about her commitment to the poor, the sick, and the least of God's children. http://info.americancatholic.org/mother-teresa.  Your child will also be bringing home a brochure to share with you about Mother Teresa.

Each week Archbishop Listecki sends out a weekly message called "Love One Another" to all the employees of the archdiocese. I have enjoyed reading it so much; I have forwarded it on to family and friends.  This year there will be a link so you can read it. This week he tells a story about rites of passage.  Click here

If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call.  I would be happy to listen.

Yours in Christ,

Mary Tretow

3rd Graders are excited for the first day of school to begin.
Office Notes
School Hours
School begins every morning at 7:45 a.m. The first bell rings at 7:35 a.m., and that is the time that the students are allowed to go into the building. If your child/children are going to be late please let the office know either by calling us at (262)782-7057 or emailing us at [email protected]. We will also need to know your child's/children's lunch choice at that time.

Busing
The first week of school the buses usually run late.  This is because it is important for the parents to meet the bus drivers. If after this week there are still issues please contact the school and we will be happy to contact the bus company for you. If your child doesn't get off the bus at the end of the day, you can do two things, call the school office or call the bus company directly at 262-797-7680.  Make sure that you know your child's bus number when calling.

Playground/Lunchroom Duty
We are asking that when you come to do your playground or lunchroom duties, please arrive five minutes before your scheduled time.  This way you can check yourself in with Mrs. Dries at the school office and we can make sure that everyone who is scheduled for that day arrives to do their duty.

Library Volunteers Needed
We still need a few library volunteers for the following classes:
K4 Mrs. Lesnjak, Gr.2 Miss Koepke, Gr. 2 Mrs. Parks. The commitment is just a half hour each month. Toddlers and babies are welcome. Please contact Miss Benson ([email protected]) for days and times available.

Summer Keyboarding
Over the summer, the students had the opportunity to participate in the 600 Minute Keyboarding Project. Any students who completed the log sheet can turn it in to Miss Benson and receive their prize.

Scholarship for next year High School
The John and Kathleen Schneider Family Foundation, the Milwaukee Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (MACCW) is offering a scholarship to an 8th grade girl who will be entering a Catholic High School. • The SMV Spirit Wear site is now open and will be available through September 8th.
  • The orders will be delivered to school around September 27th and distributed by your child's homeroom teacher.
  • The sweatshirt will be the only item that is "Uniform Approved." The other items are okay to wear for Spirit Wear days.
  • All orders, no matter how big or small, will incur the same service charge of $3/order.
  • Aside from the fall sale, we will plan a spring sale as well. Use this fall sale to stock up for fall or winter birthdays or for Christmas!
  • Website Note: They did not have an image available of the Youth track jacket, so it's marketed with the men's size on the website. The youth jacket is slightly different from the men's design. NEW (and exciting) this year is the option to personalize your Spirit Wear. For the track jacket only, you can choose to have your child's name or family name embroidered across the back of the collar.
  • Questions? Please contact Katie Carnell, [email protected] or 414-559-2634. A member of the Spirit Wear team will respond promptly.
Volunteering at SMV
It's hard to believe that another school year is about to start!  As a reminder, this year we have decided to change things up a bit and head online with our volunteer signup.  We hope this will simplify the process for both volunteers and committee chairs, as well as encourage even more families to get involved in the SMV community.  Please review the list of volunteer opportunities for the 2016-2017 school year, and choose the option(s) that best fits your family.  We ask that ALL families lend a hand with the auction.  A separate signup will be sent out at a later date detailing the help that will be needed with the auction.  We also strongly encourage each family to volunteer for (at least) one other activity during the school year.  While some events are the responsibility of a specific grade, we will need volunteers from ALL grades to help the host class run the event. Please feel free to pass this signup on to grandparents who may be interested in getting involved.  REMINDER: All volunteers must have completed the Safeguarding God's Children training.

Without your help, we would not be able to organize the events that make SMV so special!  Thank you!

Attention Parents:
Is your high school-aged or college-aged child interested in working as a substitute in the concession stand? The concession stand sub list is presently being updated. Subs are contracted by a school family and are paid $10/hour, or they may work for service hours. If your child is interested in being a sub, please contact Beth Parey at [email protected]

Volleyball games will begin Sept. 9/10. The volleyball game schedule is usually published Labor Day weekend. The concession duty schedule is created after the game schedule is published. As I will be out of town that weekend, the concession duty schedule will not be ready until Sept. 6 or 7. Please watch your email on those days for the concession duty schedule. If your child plays a home game that weekend, chances are good that you will be on the schedule. Please accept my apologies in advance for the short notice.
