Principal Notes                             May 16, 2013

Dear Families,

It is a very busy time here at St. Mary's right now. Every day we are busy trying to squeeze more things into the school day before we leave on summer vacation. Finally, the weather is cooperating, and it is beginning to feel like summer.

We welcomed our K4 mothers to school on Monday for Muffins with Mom. It was delightful to see how excited the K4 children were to have their moms here.

This Friday please join us for our Field Day. We will be leaving for Elm Grove Park @ 9:30 a.m. Many hours of planning have gone into this day to insure that the students will have a great time.

We have exciting news to share. This past weekend SMV had three Jr. High teams compete in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee's Faith-a-Thon Competition. This is a question and answer competition, with 30 teams from Milwaukee area Catholic schools trying to gain the most points by answering questions correctly about our Catholic faith. Overall, our grade 6 team finished in 3rd place in their division, our 7th grade 1st place in their division, and our grade 8 team in 4th place in their division. Congratulations to all of our teams for their strong showing and great efforts at this event. We are very proud all of you!

Mark your calendar for Wednesday, May 22. Home and School is sponsoring a Yo Mama fundraiser at the Brookfield location. Hope to see you all there.

After Mass on Tuesday, the entire school processed from the church to the school, and we had our own May Crowning. It was a short, beautiful tribute to Mary. We have moved our Mary statue into the atrium. We told the children that if they like, they could bring in flowers to honor her. We will be placing them in front of the statue.

The faculty and staff would like to give a big thank you to everyone who made Teacher Appreciation Week so wonderful. We all feel so honored to be at St. Mary's.

Just a reminder, please make sure tuition, Afterschool Care and hot lunch balances are paid soon. Unfortunately we will need to hold the final report card if they are not paid.

Faithfully,

Mrs. Mary Tretow

                  IS KEYBOARDING DEAD?

Some say that with voice recognition software children will not need keyboarding skills in the near future. Untrue! Keyboarding will not disappear fast enough to save your students from typing homework, writing papers, sending e-mails, filling out applications and a multitude of other things. More importantly, it is projected that within the next few years most standardized testing, including essay responses, with be administered online. Strong keyboarding skills continue to be critical.

Our students at SMV have keyboarding instruction and practice all year long, and in past years we have offered keyboarding classes in the summer. We will not be offering the class this summer because of technology upgrades that will be taking place throughout our building. To keep everyone's skills sharp over the summer, Miss Benson and Mrs. Brandtjen are recommending the websites below for home practice. You will notice an attached document on this "virtual backpack" called, Summer Keyboarding Log. Any student who practices 600 minutes before school begins in the fall will receive an out-of-uniform pass for a designated day in September. Although this activity is encouraged for students in grades 3-8, younger students can give it a try if you feel it is not too much pressure.

Use these suggested sites, or any others your children may know:

http://funschool.kaboose.com/fun-blaster/games/game_super_hyper_spider_typer.html

http://www.tvokids.com/games/keyboardclimber

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/

http://www.teachingkidscomputers.com/home-row-keys/lesson-1.html

http://www.freetypinggame.net/     (Advertisements on this site may be distracting to younger kids.)

If you are interested in purchasing keyboarding software, I highly recommend, Typing Instructor for Kids (Individual Software, Inc.) It is very fun, inexpensive, and easily available on Amazon or from your local office supply store.
