"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."

LLM's 4th Annual Summer Picnic

Come join us for LLM's 4th Annual Summer Picnic at Shillito Park Shelter 1 on June 6th from 11AM-1PM. We'll kick off summer right with great company, food, and games. We will have our classic watermelon eating contest, cornhole, and volleyball, as well as drawings for door prizes. Per tradition, winners of certain games will choose an administrator to pie in the face. We hope to see you there!
Family of the Month: The Hales

This month, another one of LLM's beloved families invited us into their lives. Lin and Katie Hale have been with the ministry since September of 2010. When we spoke with this mother daughter team, we noticed a few characteristics immediately: they are always smiling, they always have a kind word for another, and they love each other deeply.

Their conversation ebbed and flowed with both humor and seriousness. Lin took us back to the beginning to when Katie had just been born. At the time, the doctors did their best to prepare Katie's parents for what to expect. "Katie will never walk. She'll never be potty-trained. She'll never ride a bike." To that last one, Lin laughed and said, "Well, she still can't ride a bike." Lin did not get stuck in the "nevers." "Never believe the doctors," she said, "They are full of doom and gloom."

Lin talked about raising Katie. Her light-hearted mix of picking-fun at herself, at Katie, and at life was contagious. She said if she had to rate Katie from 1-10 based on who she is it would be a 12. "She's always been a twelve in my book. She's my Katie. She's my blessing." Lin never treated Katie any different than her son. A reminder to us that we are not defined by the labels that are placed on us.

There were days, after Katie's dad's passed away, when Lin looked up and could only say uncle. "How anyone can go through this journey...you can't do it without our Lord. God has shown us what blessings are. I've always believe you won't get more than you can handle."

She went on to talk about how life is different now that Katie is an adult and her father is gone. It is important for Katie to have her own life, friends, and activities. "I'm not going to be here forever and I don't want her tied down. There will always be a level of dependency. I am thankful Katie has a home away from home. We are all family. This," she held out her hands to indicate LLM, "is what I believe will keep her going. It's not just the participants, it's the staff, that's where the bond is. This is my plan for when I am no longer here."

When asked what advice Lin and Katie would give families Katie said confidently, "It's a battle no matter what."

"Follow your hearts and never give up. If one door closes, fight for another to open," Linn adds.

A couple of resources that have assisted Lin and Katie along the way have been Special Olympics and Jessamine Connection. Jessamine Connection allowed Katie to take classes with Asbury students. There was a drastic improvement in Katie's vocabulary and conversational skills as a result of the classes. Special Olympic has helped build Katie's confidence, independence, and character. Linn also emphasized the supports that great friends bring.

Towards the end of the conversation, Linn said," Someone asked me once, if I could make her typical, would I?" She didn't answer the question, but smiled.
Participant Spotlight: Ralph Beasely

Few people can claim to enjoy baseball as much as Ralph. Last month he was honored with throwing out the first pitch at the Lexington Legend's game, where Lord's Legacy was featured as the non-profit of the night. The throw clocked above 30 MPH and landed straight into the catcher's glove.
Holding Grace - A Blog from the Heart

"O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water." (Ps. 63:1-2)

We see Jesus pray more often than we hear him talk about prayer. Talking about prayer is hardly effective, yet, knowing God through prayer doesn't change who God is, it changes us as His followers.

Often we are caught up in how to pray or the "right" religious words to say to a god who is way up in heaven. The Bible shares that Jesus is closer than a brother, and that God is the Father of all nations! We do not have to formulate a religious etiquette or a perfect prayer to get His attention. God is alive on the inside of us. We decide how we allow him to flow through us.

As a teenager, I would push God's voice away when I felt him prompting me. I didn't want to submit to a life I couldn't control and trust someone fully with my world. Now, knowing him as Father, I realize I wasn't the only one struggling with this thought. Surprised? ;) The truth is, God chooses not to go beyond what we give him access to. He is gentle, kind, and willing to let us call the shots through our free will. God is absolutely sovereign, but he gives us the right to choose Him. The best way for us as believers to communicate with an all powerful, all knowing God is simple, we have to quit. Quit trying to be someone we aren't in prayer and get raw and real with Him. He knows how we are feeling. Being transparent opens the ears for greater intimacy and takes the pressure off of us to try and be perfect. This sets us free to enjoy this life on earth, by enjoying Him more fully.

Let's be encouraged not to focus on the how-tos of prayer, but instead on who you are praying to! The more we read His words to us in the Bible, the less we will doubt that He hears us in prayer.

Jesus, thank you so much for never leaving me. Thank you for pursuing me when I don't pursue you. I know that in my weakness, your strength is made perfect! Thank you for giving your children a direct line to hearing your voice! Help our unbelief and let us rest in knowing you know us better than we know ourselves.

Much Love,
Meg
LLM Presents: Amber Lovell

It is our privilege to present another superb LLM team member. This month we are highlighting Amber Lovell. It is rare for someone to make such a big impression in so short a time, but since Amber began her journey with us in March, she has been a shining light to several of the participants.

It proved difficult to convince Amber to talk about herself. She started with who she loves, the three ladies she works with. She said she doesn't take any time she has with them for granted, and serves with the mentality that this could be last time she will see them so that she will always give them the best of herself.  "All the participants are at a crucial age where they need direction and advice," Amber said, "I try to be a good example and a light to these young women. We all have things that are difficult to overcome and it's those things that make us special and unique in the Lord's eyes."

Currently Amber is in the process of advancing her degree in Christian Counseling. She and her fianće view all the work they do as ministry to God. They have done youth conferences in various churches and have both been preaching since a young age.

In her free time, Amber enjoys biking, shopping, and doing various outdoor activities. Rebecca Swihart, Amber's supervisor said, "Amber is humble and proactive in all she does. She has proven to be reliable and strives to do her best for LLM and the participants."

We are truly blessed to have such a strong woman of God as part of the team!
Saying Goodbye to the Deitz

Few people can make you feel as welcome and comfortable as Willis Deitz. In his years of being with Lord's Legacy he has infused life and laughter to others. He was the gatekeeper to the ministry, assuring that potential members of the LLM team were of top quality. It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to him as he moves into the next phase of his life. He and his wife will be opening a mobile dentistry business to serve those who are otherwise unable to make it to a dentist office. Willis will also be using this next season in his life to continue his education with Southern Baptist Seminary.

Lord's Legacy is currently reviewing numerous applicants who have expressed interest in serving in the ministry. We will miss Willis deeply and are excited for this new season at LLM.

John Roberts: The Story of a World Changer Continues

When we last gave an update on JR he was just finishing his fall semester at Kentucky Christian College. He had been balancing a hefty 18 credit hours while gaining quite the reputation on the soccer field. In the fall, JR will be transitioning to Transylvania University after much prayer to continue his education. It is our goal to continue walking alongside JR as he relentlessly pursues his dream. We ask that our LLM family comes together to give him the support he needs to finish his education and take his knowledge with him back home to Haiti to effect social change.

While things are continuing to progress, there are ways you can help:

Pray: Continue to pray for God's provision and guidance in his life. Transitioning to a new University and into the workforce is huge! Pray that the government expedites his paperwork so that he may work off campus this Fall.

Buy Coffee:  We need $385 to submit his economic hardship paperwork to the government. This paperwork will grant him permission to work off campus for 20 hours a week while school is in session and up to 40 hours a week while school is on break. In order to raise the money, we've partnered with Alltech and are selling 12 oz bags of coffee. Here's some information about the coffee and the program: http://www.alltech.com/philanthropy/sustainable-haiti-project/fair-trade-coffee
  • Bags can be purchased for $12.
  • The beans are made in Haiti and roasted in Winchester.
  • A portion of all purchases will go to JR and the rest will go back to Haiti.
  • The have whole bean and ground options (espresso, regular, and french vanilla options available).
If you are interested, please let us know at Central Office.

Donate Stuff: A yard sale is being planned for JR. If you have stuff you'd like to donate, please drop it off at LLM.

Sign-Up: John Robert will begin teaching a Creole class once he returns from Haiti on June 5th. Currently, we have two folks interested and hope to have more. He is very excited about this opportunity to share his language with us. If you'd like more details, let me know. (Michelle and Lori, I'll send you an e-mail in a couple of weeks).

Donate Cash: The Fundly account is active and accepting donations. We need around $20,000 to make this year successful. (Of course, we hope to offset this expense by getting permission to work from the government). Thank you to those that are contributing monthly and giving one time gifts. You mean more to us than you'll ever know. If you would like more details, please visit our site: fundly.com/john-robert-viellard-college-fund

Partnership:  Do you know someone that is an expert fundraiser or have a friend that is? If so, please let us, know! We are looking for folks to partner with us and give us wisdom on how to make this year's financial goal.

Thank you so much for your continued love, support, and guidance.
