Family of the Month: The Radigans
|
| | Katie spending time with her friends at the Adult Day Training Center |
When providing care for a loved one with any form of disability, a strong support network is crucial. As a way of widening our support system, we'd like to create a forum to highlight one family each month. This month we'd like to tell you about the Radigans.
John and Paula Radigan have been doing life with their daughter Katie for 35 years. Katie has a diagnosis of Epilepsy. She is a bright young woman who is able to make people smile with her sweet spirit and quick wit. Her Mom, Paula, says that she has a gift for making people laugh. Katie has a great love for her family.
There are unique challenges the family has faced over the years due to the frequency of Katie's seizures. She has yet to find employment, due to an employer's fear of her having a seizure and injuring herself on the job. Katie carries a constant worry of when a seizure is going to hit. Paula says that she is looking for more hope that something will come along to allow Katie to have happiness and freedom from seizures.
For the Radigans, they live a life of both struggle and joy, as they combat the daily seizures. Paula says, "It's a long road, but you just have to go with it and say your prayers."
Finding resources and support have always been a struggle over the years. In Georgia the Radigans attended Epilepsy meetings and reports that the Epilepsy meetings held at UK are top notch.
For those who are reading this and experience epilpesy, or have a loved one who does, Katie, with much optimism in her voices advises to, "keep on trucking. You just have to keep on trucking."

LLM Presents: Jyoti Conley
Jyoti Conley, formerly Jyoti Alexander, is a familiar face around LLM. Since July of 2013, she has been a shining light in the Adult Day Training Center. In October of 2013, Jyoti was highlighted in the newsletter for her dedication to the participants, and a year and a half later, she has continued to provide exceptional supports.
Jyoti spent her young life in India. Living in poverty, she was adopted at an early age and came to live in America. Jyoti is a strong advocate for the marginalized citizens of society, and works hard to assure victims of abuse and injustice are having their voice heard. In her free time, Jyoti enjoys ridings bikes with her husband and sister-in-law, cooking, and learning and experiencing a variety of vegetarian dishes.
When speaking on Jyoti's skills in the ADT, her supervisor, Dan Ross, said, "She's incredibly reliable and very compassionate regarding participants. She has done an incredible job in challenging circumstances and is a joy to work with." LLM is thankful for her service and dedication.

Holding Grace - A Blog from the Heart Love Compels; Luke 17: 11-19

There is a story in the book of Luke about 10 men who are healed of Leprosy. In the story Jesus enters the village where the lepers are and they cry out for Jesus to have mercy on them. Jesus looked at them, I imagine with tears stinging His eyes, and says, "Go." As they follow the instructions of Jesus, they are healed. The remaining passage reads, "One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting: Praise God! He fell to the ground at Jesus' feel, thanking him for what he had done."
Worship isn't only through church service, it is our lifestyle. It is the posture and position of our hearts. I believe Jesus is looking for the one in nine who returns to Him. The one who, after the church service ends, when all alone and could do a million other activities, is compelled by love to return to His Presence. The one leper has shown me that even when others don't understand why you love Jesus the way you do, you continue to love him all the more. The love of Jesus compels us to go beyond natural reason. He is larger than our understanding and through Him we live and breathe and have our being.
This month, join me in focusing on love that compels us to spend time in prayer, worship, and the reading of His word. A love that compels us to show radical love and forgiveness, as we live our lives mirroring that one leper, on our knees before a God who is worthy, faithful, and glorious.
Much love,
Meg
