Participant Spotlight: Spencer Yurt

For those of you who know Spencer, you know that he is a man of great character, he loves his friends and family dearly and is always willing to help out when needed. Spencer is  a poet, a baseball player, a card shark and for the last couple of years he has been breaking down barriers one step at a time.

Every week, Spencer meets with his therapist, and through the help of the equipment depicted to the right, walks a half a mile each week. Something most of us do without thinking, required great determination for Spencer and recently he achieved the goal of walking 150 total miles. Spencer is an example of what can be be accomplished by working hard and refusing to give up. Even the smallest steps that we take are enough to get us around big obstacles, if we just keep on walking.

LLM Presents: Kathleen McDaniel

Kathleen McDaniel has made a big impact in a short time. She came to Lord's Legacy because she desired to work for a non-profit ministry to fulfill her calling to serve others. Kathleen is a Kentucky native. She grew up in Georgetown and came to Lexington to obtain her degree in Kinesiology and Health Promotion.  Her hobbies include spending time outdoors, exercising, and hanging with her husband and their dog Mattie.

The most rewarding part of working at Lord's Legacy for Kat is being able to promote independence and the achievement of goals in the lives of the participants. She has greatly enjoyed getting to know the ladies and being a part of their lives. When talking with Samantha Grigsby, Kat's supervisor, she said that Kat is "Just awesome. Very reliable and on top of things."

Lord's Legacy is thankful for yet another amazing member of the LLM team.
Holding Grace: A Blog from the Heart
 An Interesting Encounter

"Sometimes the issue of following Jesus isn't as much about doing it as it is the when to do it."

Everyday we are faced with challenges. It is in the challenges, more than when everything is seemingly going our way, that our commitment to Jesus is truly put to the test. It is in these moment that we can show Jesus our devotion.

Below are a few paragraphs that really hit home with me this week. I love challenges and I hope that you finds the words of Christine Caine with the A21 Campaign insightful:

Jesus had an interesting encounter with three men in the book of Luke. As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you do." Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."

He said to another man, "Follow me." But he replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family." Jesus replied, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

Notice that the word "first" keeps repeating in the passage. Not one of these men said anything about not following Jesus; their issue was when to follow Him. These men exemplify delayed commitment, but following Jesus must come before every other responsibility. The challenge is to set our priorities first and not just follow Jesus when it is convenient. We cannot let our comfort, convenience, or choices distract us from Jesus and His purpose.

Our challenge this month is to commit to Jesus our life in ALL things. Not through delay and a "let me first see if this fits in my schedule" mentality, but a whole-hearted "I can't live without you Jesus" mindset that sets the tone of our very existence.

Much Love,
Meg

LLM Welcomes Julie Thomas as New House Manager

While our standards are high, it is nothing compared to the standards God has for those we serve in this population. That is to say, the people who shine brightest in our ministry has not so much to do with us, as it does God, and Julie Thomas has shined from the moment she walked through our doors.

Julie has been with LLM for a year and a half. She has served as a DSP and as our Support Employment Specialist, excelling in helping the participants she serves reach their goals. Julie is by far one of the most loving members of the LLM team, with a heart wholly devoted to loving and serving those in the ministry.

Born and raised in Canada, Julie moved to the states after meeting her husband at Bible college. She and her husband have spent their married years pastoring in various places, including Florida and Illinois. They have two boys and one girl and in her free time Julie enjoys gardening and knitting.

Julie says that her favorite part about her time at LLM is working individually with the participants. She has found that the most challenging part is helping potential employers see the value of the participants when it comes to job skills.

Lord's Legacy is thrilled to have Julie step into this administrative role and is looking forward to how her compassionate heart will impact the participants in the home.
