This week at LunchPad, our weekly lunch to launch new ideas, we played a game-similar to Wise or Otherwise, if you've ever played that (and if you haven't you should! It's a lot of fun). The idea is that in each round, the group is given half a saying. Each player comes up with an ending, and then, after hearing all the entries and the actual saying read aloud, the group tries to guess which is the real one. Wise and Otherwise uses traditional sayings from around the world; at LunchPad we used "inspirational" quotes.
Aside from the general fun that comes from being forced to spontaneously create--and to hear others' creations--the game brought up some really interesting discussion about what inspires and motivates us. The two top choices for William E. Channing's quote, "Difficulties are meant to rouse. . ." were:
- Difficulties are meant to rouse the imagination
- Difficulties are meant to rouse, not discourage
Some folks liked the positivity and direction of the first (not only are difficulties a constructive thing, but here's what you can do with them!), while others thought the second a more broad and powerful statement on turning challenge into opportunity.
Which would you choose? What rouses your imagination, inspires your work?

Now that high school plays are over, do you know teens who want to jump back into the theater experience? The Scene launches on May 17th, and we're offering a discount for the program's first installation! Space is limited, so register now!
We asked our collaborator, Andy Arden Reese, to tell us about her philosophy and what she's excited about seeing when The Scene launches. Here's some of what she had to say:
"It is my essential job as a theater creator to breathe LIFE to words, to crack open text and find its true pulsing heart. . . I am always wonderfully surprised and in awe of what emerges on the other side of an intensive workshop like this. Not only has a group of individuals come together into a collective community (a beautiful process in and of itself) but a work of art is born. A living, beating work of art. Art of the NOW."

"Loved the way this was done . . . It was fun and gave me some great internal insights. Wish I could do more coaching with Bob!"
"The workshop was excellent! It exceeded my expectations. It was a communication training with an out-of-the-box style."
"So much fun! Great to be with folks trying something new. Lovely positive energy."

There are so many inspiring individuals who make up the Purple Crayon community, and we want everyone to know about them! Our series of blog posts highlighting some of their accomplishments kicked off recently with freelance cartoonist Isabella Bannerman. She's recently self-published a book, Cartoons for Caregivers, with the help of a fellow Purple Crayon community member.
