Sarah's Note

So, as those of you who have attended the open mic or who know me outside of The Purple Crayon may know, I am a singer/songwriter (though a relatively lapsed one in recent years). I used to perform around New York City a bit, a decade or so ago, and have made some more recent appearances at Antoinette's and The Hastings Farmer's Market, sometimes on my own and sometimes as part of a duo called Kismet, with my good friend and fellow songwriter, Jessica Seidel.

Recently Jessica and I got together to visit and play some music. By chance, the curator of The Purple Crayon's Live @ TPC! series (who, ok, is also my husband) happened to pass by and say, "That's who should open for Freedy Johnston!" So for the first time in our two years of live music events at The Purple Crayon, I'll be taking the stage.

This upcoming performance has brought up a lot of feelings for me. In a worklife/business that is already such a personal expression for me, it adds yet another reveal to the process. But it also gives me a chance to come full circle, in a way, and bring another piece of myself to The Purple Crayon, so all my "creativity and productivity" is in one place!

Bottom line: I'm excited to share some music with you on April 13th, and I hope you'll join me in sharing all your "creativity and productivity"--even the more latent expressions of them--with the world this spring.

 Announcing: The Scene

We are excited to announce that The Purple Crayon is working with veteran actor and director Andy Arden Reese to offer an exciting new progressive theater project for teens, The Scene.

In just one weekend, participants will create, rehearse, and perform a totally new piece based on themes and inspirations from the acclaimed musical, Spring Awakening. More importantly, they will work together to discuss and explore the important, powerful issues raised in the play, and learn new and profound things about themselves, each other, and the dramatic process.

The program has a limited number of spots; registration is now open.

April 13th

Freedy Johnston kicks off the spring season on April 13th with what promises to be a truly memorable evening. The singer-songwriter's music is "often praised for [its] literary quality - and deservedly so - but it also hits you on a gut level." Kismet, made up of Sarah Silbert Hinawi and Jessica Seidel, will open the show. Read more about Freedy and his visit to The Purple Crayon on our blog, and check out this video of a radio performance of "The Other Side of Love"
