Sarah's Note

Marissa Meyer's ban on telecommuting at Yahoo is all over the news and it's raising some much-needed conversation about what it means to work from home.

As a co-worker, though, I find Meyer's move less interesting an indication of her stance on family-friendliness, and more as a sign of a backlash (one I've long anticipated), against individuals working in isolation on their computers and a return to cohesion and togetherness, to face-to-face interaction and collaboration as a boost for effectiveness and productivity.

Even more interesting to me is how this decision coincides with these recent statistics from Deskmag about the benefits of coworking, referenced recently in an article in Fast Company magazine:

"Even if you aren't an entrepreneur or freelancer, the benefits of coworking . . . are pretty hard to ignore: 71 percent of participants reported a boost in creativity since joining a coworking space, while 62 percent said their standard of work had improved."

This is not to say corporate workplaces can't be flexible and accommodate their employees needs, nor that you can't be productive while working at home. There is no one size fits all solution. What it does say, though, is that where you work and who you work with matters.

"Fun. Friendly. Inspiring. Collaborative. Productive.
If you wouldn't define your workplace with any or all of those terms, you may have to ditch your own desk and take a seat at a coworking space near you"

Grab your fun, friendly, inspiring, collaborative, productive desk at the Inc. and join our growing community of coworkers!
