KMG Instructor of the month

Name:  Pedro Aneiros

Age: 36 years

Occupation:
  • KM Instructor for civilians
  • KM Instructor and shooting instructor for regular police and special units.
  • Physical preparation for fighters and sportsmen.

Krav Maga experience:

I started KM in 2000 at the rate of 4 training sessions per week.

Back then, I was driving 160 km every evening to train.

In 2002 I received my Instructor diploma. I then passed various instructor modules for the police force and VIP protection and opened the EKMC (Krav Maga School in La Chaux-de-Fonds).

I joined KMG in 2011 and in 2012 passed my Expert 1 grade in Israel. My goal wasn't to be recognized as a KM expert but to find out whether the knowledge I was passing on to my students was still exact. It is imperative that I constantly question myself and the quality of my knowledge in order to guarantee my students the best training possible.

Why Krav Maga

I started combat sports with boxing. I rapidly needed more, so I started Muay Thai and fought on an international level. In addition I started the Vietnamese martial art (Vo Vietnam) in order to work with knives.

One evening, I was attacked by several people and stabbed in the abdomen. Unfortunately, my knowledge of Thai boxing and Vo Vietnam were of not much help to me!

Once I recovered from my wounds, I went to see my Vo Vietnam instructor and asked him to teach me how to defend myself against a knife attack. He told me that I had to get my blue belt, which meant me waiting another two years at the least, in order to acquire this knowledge.

Following a friend's advice, I went to try a KM course to see what it was all about and my first lesson was...defense against a knife attack. You can imagine...I signed straight away and haven't stopped since.

Weekly training regime:

I devote about 2-3 hours per week to my personal KM training. In addition, I do 2 hours of Muay Thai per week and a daily physical training session dedicated to strength and endurance. I hope to continue Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu once my joints stop playing up. I attend KMG seminars as often as possible KMG in Europe and Israel.

Most effective Krav Maga technique:

Fortunately or unfortunately, I haven't had many opportunities to use KM in real life situations. Other than strikes and restrain ground techniques, which I personally put into use are the take down from behind and from the side. Undoubtedly efficient no matter how heavy the opponent is.

Another technique that I have had the opportunity to use is the defense against a knife threat from close distance with seizure and disarmament. I think I was the first surprised to find the knife in my hand and my attacker on the ground!

Tip for KM trainees:

One of my coaches used to say that grades are not worn on the shoulder but on the phalanxes...no matter what grade you have, only your knowledge counts.

Never stop working and don't be afraid to come out of your comfort zone. Put yourself in difficulty in order to acquire more experience and privilege techniques that you find difficult rather than those you are comfortable with and like working.

 Dear Friends,

"KMG VISION"

Throughout this past year, Eyal and I have finished the process of building a work plan for the years 2013 - 2018.

With the assistance of a few Directors and the involvement of  everyone during the recent Directors meeting (Israel, June 2013) we presented to this forum the company's vision and goals for the forthcoming years.

We are pleased to share them with you:

Vision

KMG and Eyal Yanilov continue Imi's journey

of developing and sharing authentic Krav Maga skills to the global communities.

Mission Statement

KMG and Eyal Yanilov are committed to being the leading provider of Krav Maga training throughout the world. Setting unified standards, through the education provided by Eyal and all KMG Instructors.

To have professional representation in over 100 countries, providing access to KMG training to everyone (that aligns with our values).

Goals

  1. To unify the professional standards of the Global and International Teams throughout the world when delivering training such as GIC, Professional Courses, Seminars, Instructors Updates and grading.
  2. Every country/region to be working with children in some way, through clubs or through educational schools, to provide classes or courses taught by qualified instructors.
  3. Every country/region to be providing women-only training through classes or courses offered by local clubs, taught by qualified instructors.
  4. Each country to work with KMG HQ to establish a 'connection' with the Military and/or Law Enforcement community. The level of connection can vary from seminars to full instructors courses depending on the available access in each country and attitude of the units/departments.
  5. Each country to increase the brand awareness of KMG through excellent weekly and daily training; PR; organizing special/unique events and the sale of merchandise.  The aim of this is to increase the opportunity to further develop the country in the future.
  6. To ensure that the selection of new instructors is based on them aligning with the values of KMG and to educate existing instructors to operate by our values and standards.
  7. By January 2015, all countries to have a website that follows the same template as the KMG HQ website.
  8. The unification of student and instructor testing procedures throughout the world.

We believe the vision, mission statement and goals remind us all of our purpose and help us plan our everyday tasks.

Sincerely yours,

David Gorin

Saving Lives and Control
Some Issues from the Sector of KMG for
Law Enforcement

By Eyal Yanilov

Head Instructor

Imi told me once that he started teaching Self Defense techniques and approach as part of Military Krav Maga in the early 1950's when commanders from the Military Police came to him with this need as their officers/soldiers were getting punched by other soldiers, especially paratroopers, while handing out reports for inappropriate dress-code. Funny but true, and I personally know a couple of paratroopers (good friends of the family) from that generation and period of time who did this in several occasions.

On a more serious note, the following topics;  law-enforcement subjects, controlling attackers, using leverages, pain compliance, snapping on handcuffs, avoiding the use of firearm, saving lives, team work, body search, use of other nonlethal weapons, weapon retention, all of these are just some of the very complicated and difficult missions that police officers must be proficient with.

This month we conducted a Law-Enforcement Instructors Course in Norway. For 10 day, 8-9 hours per day, Rune Lind (our Norwegian director and the highest KM level in this country) and I gave the best of our time, knowledge and attention to a couple of dozen participants. All participants are KMG general / civilian instructors who wanted to upgrade themselves, some for the purpose of their work as officers of the law and instructors of Police or Military units and others to improve their teaching skills and expand their knowledge in order to pass on to  civilian and Police officers students in their regular training groups. In this article I will address only a couple of issues from this vast subject.

There are many reasons why a police officer should use his pistol, the service weapon, as a firearm and shoot a criminal or a terrorist. However, there are also 10 very important reasons or situations why not to shoot, even in the midst of a violent incident, when the weapon is already in his hand and out of the holster. The simplest reason is that at close range, when it is necessary to shoot, the pistol malfunctions or the ammunition runs out. The remaining option is to utilize any available resource, including using the pistol as an impact weapon, striking with it to overcome the attacking criminal. There are also some less obvious reasons that unless taught, most do not consider, for instance that it could be too dangerous to shoot. Too dangerous because innocent people are close by and a hostage or a VIP maybe badly hurt. In such case the remaining options include KM, attacking, defending, controlling, protecting, all the while with the weapon in the hand (to put the weapon back in the holster is usually a ridiculous, nonrealistic option). The issue of not discharging a firearm is also relevant in situations where there are dangerous substances in the area such as fuel or gas. A few months ago there were several examples of innocent people getting hurt. In one incident two NYPD officers chased and gunned down a killer in the middle of the street. While doing so they discharged over 15 rounds and unfortunately shot 6 innocent bystanders as well as the criminal. Horrific outcome!
